GUESS,

Charles L. Guess, Sr., also known to many as Charlie, was born in Powellton, West Virginia to Iler Cranor Guess and Thomas Guess on February 21, 1926. He was the oldest of seven children. Charles grew up during the Great Depression with Herbert Corpening as his loving father and role model during his formative years. His father’s early lessons endured with Charles during his entire lifetime. Charles was educated at Bluestone High School, until he joined the Army infantry during World War II. Charles fought with the Army in Asia, and shared many humorous stories of his experience with friends and family.
On August 9, 1946 Charles married Marthella Lunsford and to this union was born Charles Jr., Harold, Pamela and Patricia. Charles also had one daughter, Brenda, with Ruth Watkins (Alexander), and one daughter, Monique, with Frances Cutter. Charles and Marthella moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1953, but he spent many years residing in Ashtabula, Ohio with his parents and siblings. Charles spent the last 25 years of his life in Columbus. He was a devoted grandfather to 30 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Charles was an excellent artist in oils and woodcarving. He spent his final years building many beautiful birdhouses. He loved animals and enjoyed National Geographic and any learning and historical channels. Charles was a hardworking individual, and worked in the West Virginia coal mines as a young man. He also retired from Rockwell International, in 1988 but never really quit working. Charles worked for Charleen Hinson of Hinson Limited until April 2010.
Charles Louis Guess, Sr. passed away on October 22, 2010 in Columbus, Ohio. Charles is predeceased by his parents, two brothers William and James Corpening, one grandson, Gregory A. Campbell, Jr., his former spouses, Marthella, and Frances Cutter. He is survived by his children, Charles L. Guess, Jr., Harold H.C. Guess, Pamela (Jackie) Leslie, Patricia (Tyrone) Malone, Brenda Matthews, Monique
Guess, and ex-spouse, Ruth Watkins. Charles is also survived by his brother, Roosevelt (Louise) Corpening, his sisters, Josephine Hunter, Gloria Jean (Frank) Gums, and Barbara Jean (David) Brown. “Grandpa” will be dearly missed by all his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends. REST IN PEACE UNTIL THE RESURRECTION.

Charles was like a father to me. I always considered Charles and Mrs. Guess as part of my family. He would do anything for you and his grandkids. Always willing to help. He worked all his life to support his family. I learned a lot from just listening to him. He will be sadly missed by all of us. I send my condolences to Pamela and family.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy
to Charlie's family. He was such a good man,
and I always felt like he was part of our family.
He always had a smile, and he always had a story! He will be greatly missed until we meet again in Our Fathers loving arms.
    Well done Charlie!!!!!!!

  9. Gramps! I remember the first time I met you. Me, Toya, and Jasmine were playing tennis for Heights. You were so funny, and made me feel like one of the family. R.I.P

  10. Blood doesn't make you family and although his blood does not flow through my veins…..he was family to me and my mom! They would laugh and talk for hours at a time. He treated me like a granddaughter and didn't treat me any different than he would Missy or Tiffy. He definitely was a great person and we loved him a lot! It was a treat to see him when we were little because when he visited because back then Pataskala seemed like it was another state and so we enjoyed that time with him! I don't have to tell you how great he was because you know and I hope that brought a smile to your face like it just did mine! I will keep the family in prayers and please accept my condolences to the family.

  11. Linda Turner & Family
