Deacon Robert Johnson, Sr.

Robert “June”Johnson, 87, of Dayton, Ohio passed away at the Wood Glen Alzheimer’s Center after a short illness on November 21, 2011. He was born on July 18, 1924 in Newnan, Georgia to the late Lella Mae and Robert Johnson
Robert attended school in Newnan, Georgia and relocated to Dayton in 1936. At the young age of 18, he entered the military and served in the US Army. Robert served his country in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was employed at Frigidaire for a number of years and at Kettering Medical Center for ten years, where he enjoyed his job immensely. He was known for being able to make a floor shine to a high luster. Robert Johnson was also the proud owner of Johnson’s Car Wash.
He attended Friendship Baptist Church of Dayton where he accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He was a faithful member of the Canaan Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Deacon Board.
Robert loved traveling and being outdoors. He was known to clean the streets in his community and for walking long distances without hesitation. He loved keeping a well groomed yard and he was always dressed to impress. He often volunteered his time assisting people at the senior citizen centers by serving meals to those who couldn’t serve themselves.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Edna Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Frankie Mae Hawkins and sister, Katherine Johnson.
He is survived by his son Robert (Linda) Johnson, daughter Robyn (Lee) Darden, sister Jennie Mae Hawkins, grandchildren Todd Green, Stephanie Purdue, Venita Darden, Brandon Darden,and Robert Johnson III, a special nephew Paris (Debra)Hawkins and a host of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
