John Matthew “Captain John” Smith, age 76. Sunrise June 24, 1939 in Rural Retreat, VA and Sunset August 14, 2015 at OSU Hospital East. John was a graduate of Scott Memorial in Wytheville, VA, a veteran of the U.S. Army during Vietnam, a member of St. James Baptist Church where he served with the Usher and Choir Ministries, and retired from the Columbus City Schools. He was preceded in death by his parents Annie Esther and Henry Garland Smith Sr., and siblings Virginia Hall, Henry Smith Jr., James Smith Sr., Willie Mae Heller, Jean Smith, Charlene Ward, Alvin Clark Smith and Rudolph Smith. Left to cherish his memory, sons Nathan A. (Lolita) Smith, Michael Smith and Daryl (Sherri) Smith, daughter Angelia Smith Robbins, sisters Terry (Burley) Price and Brenda Hash, 18 grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, special friends Margaret Helwig, Ann Copas, Jerome Hamlin, Mike Langston, Brandi James and Vanessa and Frank Drew, special niece Elaine (Wesley) Davis and a host of other family and friends. Visitation 6:00pm and Funeral 7:00pm Thursday August 20, 2015 at St. James Baptist 1311 E. Hudson .
