Barbara L. Fowlkes, 82, transitioned from this life to be in the presence of the Lord on Sunday, April 5th, 2020.

Born December 23, 1937 in Columbus Ohio to Lewis Carter and Evelyn Carter McGaughy of Columbus Ohio. Barbara was the fifth born of 13 children of this union.

She graduated from East High School in 1956 and married Alonzo (Lonnie) West Sr. They had 4 children – Alonzo Jr. (Lonnie Jr), Elaine, Russell and Eric West. Barbara instilled in her children the value of hard work, the concept of achieving your goals and the importance of family.

She has always been a kind and giving person and it is appropriate that she worked at Grant and University Hospitals before bringing her talents to the Franklin County Department of Human Services. She retired after 27 years of service in 1989.

Barbara served the Lord as a faithful member of Hosack Street Baptist Church until she later joined New Birth Christian Ministries. She was a long-time member of the La Petite Club. She and her fellow club members organized events, trips and worked as examples of commitment and organization to friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lewis Carter and Evelyn Carter McGaughy; husbands, Alonzo West Sr and Lawrence E. Fowlkes; son, Eric L. West; (2) sisters Eva Burnett, Mildred L. Humphries.

She leaves to cherish fond memories son Alonzo (Cynthia) West Jr of Oakland California, Elaine M West, Russell (Daphine) West, stepchildren Mark Fowlkes and Stephanie Fowlkes; grandchildren Yolanda (Jason) Jackson, Lee West, Alisha (James) Womack III, Justin (Kelly) West, Essence West, Eric West Jr, Rustin West; (3) step-grandchildren Gabrielle Fowlkes, Amarra Fowlkes, Sydnee Fowlkes and the love of her life 11 great grandchildren, Jayda West, Kiev West, Jordan Turner, Cleveland Brown Jr, Kennedy West, Ajaylon West, Jayla Jackson, Ava West, Juliana Jackson, James Womack IV and Zoey Womack; (2) sisters Ernestine Menefield, Karen Carter; (5) brothers, John (Shirley) Carter, Robert (Treva) Carter, David (Gerry) Carter, Raymond (Winnie) Carter and Paul (Flora) Carter; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.

To the amazing Barb or Ms WesT who our Mother insisted we call her, She was the Mother across the Street on 20th that helped raise us. We borrowed cups of Sugar, Floor & anything else we all needed to get by. That was the time we all lived in. She part of the reason our Street was a place of calm and respect in the middle of sometimes crazy Linden. We Love her. Love her snd just shock time has seemed to go so quickly. She was forever a part of us. Thank you Barb.
