Reverend Dr. Charles Edward Booth, Pastor of The Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, age 72. Born February 4, 1947 in Baltimore, MD and went to be with The Lord March 23, 2019 in Columbus, OH.
Preaching the Gospel is a life calling for the Reverend Dr. Charles E. Booth. He was the Senior Pastor of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Booth traveled the world preaching and teaching the Gospel. Education was a very high priority for this pastor, particularly Christian education. He has preached on college, university, and seminary campuses throughout this country. Dr. Booth is married to Crystal Washington Booth and they have a daughter, Kennedy.
Dr. Booth earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Howard University and his Master of Divinity degree from Eastern Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned the Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio where he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees. In 2016 he received the Distinguished Ministry Award from United Theological Seminary.
Dr. Charles E. Booth was an author, publishing his book, Bridging the Breach: Evangelical Thought and Liberation in the African-American Preaching Tradition (Urban Ministries) in 2000. The Prophetic Voice: Words for Today was released in 2011. His most recent publication, released in 2014 – Stronger in my Broken Places; Claiming a Life of Fullness in God.
Dr. Booth was a former member of the advisory board of The African American Pulpit and has contributed writings in multiple publications, such as From One Brother to Another: Voices of African American Men; The Irresistible Urge to Preach: A Collectible of African American “Call” Stories; Outstanding Black Sermons, volumes III and IV; and Wisdom of the Ages: The Mystique of the African American Preacher. Dr. Booth’s biography and a sermon appear in Preaching with Sacred Fire: An Anthology of African-American Sermons, 1750-Present.
Dr. Booth led his congregation by focusing on providing spiritual nurturing and information. “The pulpit is no place for personal opinion,” he said to attendees of the African American Leadership Workshop in 2007. “The pulpit is the place for propagation of the Gospel.” The Baltimore native has devoted the past 41 years to Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, where he has overseen substantial church growth. In 1993, Dr. Booth founded the Mount Olivet Christian Academy, later renamed the Gloria S. Friend Christian Academy in honor of its first administrator. The Academy, which has grades kindergarten through sixth, stresses excellence in academics, Christian education, and African and African American history. It is fully accredited by the Ohio Department of Education. During Dr. Booth’s tenure, Mt. Olivet raised $2.1 million to build the 100-seat Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Chapel, an administrative wing and 12 classrooms, and to expand the fellowship center, along with other facility improvements. Mt. Olivet is now in the planning stages of building an $8 million Family Life Center.
Dr. Booth had been a guest preacher to enlisted service men and women and their families in Germany; the North American preacher at the Baptist World Youth Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and a guest revivalist and preacher at churches and conferences throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Central America and Africa. He had been the guest preacher and lecturer at the historic Hampton Ministers’ Conference in 1984, 1995 and 1999.
Dr. Booth has been listed in Who’s Who Among African Americans and in Ebony magazine’s Honor Roll of Preachers. He received the 1999 James E. Stamps Alumni Recognition Award for outstanding contributions to young people attending historically black colleges and universities; the 1999 Alpha Phi Alpha and the Alpha Lambda Rho Chapter’s Vertner Woodson Tandy Award for dedicated community service. The Columbus Ohio Education Association awarded the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award to Dr. Booth for his documented commitment to local and global communities around the issues of unemployment, homelessness, education, and health.
Dr. Booth was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Hazel Willis Booth Sutton and father, William W. Booth.
Left to cherish his memory, wife Crystal Washington Booth; daughter, Kennedy Price; sisters, Sandra (William Sr.) Baptist and Abigail Booth (Glenn) Birke; nieces and nephew, Kia Baptist, Kelli Baptist and William Baptist Jr.; aunt, Velma Green; mother in law, Pearl Washington and a host of cousins and godchildren.
Dr.Booth will Lie in State 5:00pm-8:00pm and family will be present from 6:00pm -8:00pm, Wednesday March 27, 2019 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church 428 E. Main St. An additional visitation will take place from 10:00am-11:00am Thursday March 28, 2019 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church; The Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00am.

My deepest condolences to the family. Dr. Booth and a host of us all grew up together at New Shiloh Baptist Church. He was a well loved preacher and person, and will be truly missed. You are now in paradise with our Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST ! Rest in his arms.
To the family, my sincerest sympathy and prayers. Dr. Booth will be remembered and missed by many across continents. His preaching at St. Paul’s Baptist Church in West Chester, PA and those wonderful revivals we held on the Main Line (Ardmore and Haverford, PA) left quite a mark. I cannot help but smile when I remember his sermons, which were consistently inspirational, educational, and extraordinary.
My heart is heavy and my condolences goes out to the family. I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Booth when he came to close out a revival at Leach Springs MB Church located in Raeford, NC which is a small church in a rural community.
I was truly blessed by the sermons he preached and I LOVE THEM ALL. However, the thing I remember about him more than his preaching is how HUMBLED Dr. Booth was, and I am truly honored to have met him.

He was preaching his trial sermon to become the new Sr. Pastor for Mt. Olivet…41 years later, no further explanation is required. He married me and my husband 37 years ago!

My Utmost Honor and Utmost Respect to Rev Dr. Charles Edward Booth. What a great man. He came to The Park Church on a yearly basis and I literally would race in traffic from my job to get to the sanctuary to hear his sermons during the yearly revival. I was merely a face in the crowd that he never personally knew but his preaching touched all who sat under him. He preached with such vigor and he unapologetically preached God’s word everytime I heard him. I wish I could say Thank You to him so since I am unable to do so I say thank you to God for the gift and I say thank you to his family for sharing him with the world. I consider myself blessed to hear the gospel through him. My sincerest condolences to his wife and daughter. I pray God’s peace, comfort and strength to you and your church family are in my prayers.
Dr. Booth was one of the African American greats in the exegeting and proclaiming of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Whenever he came to the D.C./Maryland area, it was always my delight to hear him preach. It is my prayer that the peace of God will comfort his family and friends in the days to come. He will truly be missed.

What a well lived life! It’s sad to sick him be called home. But God has used this vessel to do many great works and impacts many lives (me being one of them). The world has lost one of the greatest preachers in that of Dr. Charles E. Booth. I’m confident that Dr. Booth will be preaching the gospel in heaven where he affirmed long ago would be his final destination. I loved Dr. Booth because for me he represented and personified that of a true Black man, who understood the interplay between life and enduring the struggle to be a righteous Black man like Dr. Booth. It was the preaching of Dr. Booth at a New Psalmist Baptist Church revival in Baltimore, MD in 1985 that I gave my life to the lord in 1985. Ever since then I like so many others have been spiritually nourished by Dr. Booth. I want to thank God and Dr. Booth’s family for sharing him and his spiritual gifts and wisdom with us. I’m sadden by his transition but I know as you do that he’s in a great place with God. Please accept my heartfelt condolence. I will never forget Dr. Charles E. Booth.

And then Dr. Booth preached at the Citywide Revival in Harrisburg, PA. Dr. Booth was an extraordinary preacher and humble servant of God. He will be greatly missed.

I was a member of New Psalmist Baptist church in Baltimore Md before moving to Houston TX Bishop Thomas always had Rev. Booth come to preach .Then as I joined Wheeler Ave Baptist church here in Houston my current Pastor Rev. Cosby always had him come preach. So I feel a sense of sadness for the loss of such a great man of God. I will trust you in this God and lean on you. My prayer today is please grant strength to his family and our Pastors and Bishops as they lay him to rest today. Let your Holy Ghost power rain in that house! Thank you Rev. Booth for the word you gave us. Well Done, take your rest nothing but joy now….
“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saint.” His absence will be greatly felt each during each Revival season at the Park Church in Charlotte NC. I pray that your family will feel God holding you close now and whenever your heart aches for the beloved Dr. Booth.

My sincerest condolences to you during your time of grief. I was truly saddened when I heard the news of Dr. Booth’s passing. He was an awesome teacher and preacher. I enjoyed when he visited New Psalmist Baptist Church because I knew Dr. Booth was coming with a mighty word. I hope Dr. Booth knew that people were listening. When my faith is being tested and I need to encourage myself, I just remember a sermon he preached emphasizing our belief and trust in God. Dr. Booth broke out in an old Curtis Mayfield song “You must believe me, no matter what the people might say.” I sing it–that song is something for my kit! I thank God for Dr. Booths life. I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Booth! I can still recall his last sermon at The Park church, called Hidden Figures. I eagerly anticipated his visit each year ,to preach during our fall revival. He was a true servant and just like David, a man after God’s own heart. He will truly be missed! It was my great joy and honor to have heard Dr. Booth preach over a stretch of years at the Hampton Ministers Conference and the Turner Seminary (AME) Founders Day. I honor him not only for his broad and serious approach to the preaching assignment, but also his ecumenical spirit. He was at home in Church! We are grateful that he accepted our invitation to preach in November 2018, the AME Planning Meeting in Orlando, and blessed us mightily.

Pastor Booth was a loving and give man. He always supported work I do with our boys and young men in Columbus, Ohio. We will be missed and remembered.
We know that our God is in charge.
I was shocked the 1st time I heard Pastor Booth preach at Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio. As a child and teen growing up in Baltimore, Md. I didn’t think there were any positive African American male role models until I heard the Word of God shared by Dr. Booth. I thought the Baltimore men were either dead or incarcerated. I didn’t think there was any good-hearted Black men in Bmore. Shortly after hearing his sermon my family and I joined Mt. Olivet in 1983 to present. You will be sorely missed Pastor Booth.
On behalf of the entire New Deliverance Evangelistic Church Family in Richmond, Virginia we extend our deepest condolences to the Booth family in the passing of this “Gospel Preaching Legend.” His life was a testimony in the earth of the Christ he served until relieved of his earthly assignment. “Home at last…”

It was always a special pleasure when Reverend Booth walked into our store, Bexley Optical Boutique. Reverend Booth got his glasses from us for many, many years. We always loved conversing with this wonderful man, and we will surely miss him greatly, with much affection and LOVE!
My wife and I express our condolences to Mrs. Booth and to the entire Mount Olivet church family on the loss of one of God’s powerful preachers and teachers of His Word in Dr. Charles Booth. The family has my heartfelt condolences and prayers. Rev. Booth married me at St. Paul’s Baptist church, West Chester, PA and I’m so forever grateful. I would visit Ardmore, PA when he would come and preach. A true man of God; preacher and teacher.

I would like to say It was an honor when I first embark upon the journey in 2015 as a disciple as I fellowship aside my sisters and brothers I am pleased to say I truly found a safe home away from home and will continue to hold on to Pastor Booth legacy.
Pastor Booth preached to me what my own biological father never taught me; and that was the value of life… And how important it is to study the word and always pray… truly pray… I am going to miss my pastor, teacher and spiritual father.

Pastor Booth was my 2nd childhood pastor. He came after H. Beecher Hicks. I recently found put Pator Booth has transitioned. I am in shock. Nothing brings the reality of the Citcle of Life as birth, and death. However, Pastor Booth changed addresses. He completed his journey here, and God has him in the overall Master plan. One thing for sure, God will be riveted, and entertained by Pastor’s Booth passionate delivery of God’s word. Job well done Pastor Booth, you have made your final journey.
