Augustus George Spears Jr., a.m. Gus unexpectedly departed this earth on Monday, October 19, 2020 sleeping peacefully in his home in Columbus, Ohio. He was 83 years old.

Mr. Spears was born to Lieutenant Colonel Chaplin Augustus George Spears Sr. and Francis Roberta Spears on December 9, 1936 in Baton Rouge, LA. As a child of a military Lieutenant, moving around was normal for the family. He attended high school on the army base in Fort Knox, KY where he played baseball. Gus played so well that his nickname became “Little Jackie Robinson.” He graduated from Hughes High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1955. Mr. Spears attended the University of Cincinnati where me met Mr. Herman Meijer who saw Augustus’ potential early on. Mr. Meijer took Mr. Spears under his wing and taught him how to become an outstanding salesman. From there, Mr. Spears relocated to Boston, MA where he was hired by Bristol Laboratories as a Pharmaceutical Salesman earning the “Top Salesman of the Year” award several years in a row. It was also in Boston, MA where Mr. Spears enjoyed his membership with the Elk’s Club and he also became a well-known DJ in the city.

During the 1960s, Augustus moved back to Cincinnati, Ohio where he met and married Ms. Marva Johnson. Of this union became his only two children Kevin Sr. and Kimberly. After the children were grown, Mr. Spears moved to Columbus, Ohio. In 1990 he met Ms. Linnie Sanders who was affectionately known as “The Love of his Life,” and with whom he spent the rest of this life loving.

In 1999, Mr. Spears was employed by Atromick International. Working for 18 years until his retirement in 2017. After retiring, he continued to serve his community by working at Walgreens and as a tax preparer part time.

Mr. Spears was a kind and gentle soul who loved spending time with his family and extended family. He always made sure that when he came to any event, he had a gift no matter how big or small. He loved to laugh, and his infectious smile will be greatly missed.

Mr. Spears is survived by his significant other Ms. Linnie Sanders of Greenwood, SC. His Children Kevin (Fonda) Spears Jr. of Columbus, Ohio and Kimberly (Ali) Abdulla of Cincinnati, Ohio. His two sisters Lillian (James) Hall of Forrest Park, Ohio and Evelyn Tucker of Erie, PA. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren David (Jocelyn) Dowe, Sasha (Roger) Lloyd, Carl Curtis, Devin Curtis, Kevin Spears Jr. Dejuan (Lashawna) Ridley and Kara Beauford all of Columbus, Ohio, and by his beloved ex-wife and lifelong friend Ms. Marva Johnson also of Columbus, Ohio. He also leaves to cherish his memory to a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mr. Spears is preceded in death by his parents Lieutenant Colonel Chaplin Augustus George Spears Sr., Francis Roberta Spears and his brother in law Eva Tucker Jr.

Private Visitation 2:00 PM and Private Funeral Service 3:00 PM Sunday, October 25, 2020 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE EAST, 5456 E. Livingston Ave.

  1. Gus was a very good friend who later became a friend of the family. When we would have Family events, he would always be there participating. I will miss the dinners we shared together and just the company we kept with one another.
    He always made sure on Valentine’s Day at Capsa, the women would receive a rose on their desk or work station. Gus a kind hearted man who I will miss greatly.
