Bettie Delores (Griffin) Jones, 71, departed this life on November 20, 2020, suddenly and unexpectedly, at home, after longstanding illness. Bettie was born on June 21, 1949, in Picayune, Mississippi. She graduated from George Washington Carver High School, in Picayune and, from 1967 through 1971, attended Jackson State University, in Jackson Mississippi. Before moving to Mansfield and undertaking her career (35 plus years) in employment and training, she worked at NASA and Head Start. Bettie worked at the local unemployment office and helped to implement various federal and state employment initiatives including the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), Summer Youth Employment Program (Youth Corps), Job Training and Partnership Act (JTPA), Private Industry Council (PIC) which culminated in in her retirement from the Richland County Department of Job and Family Services. Bettie was proud of the achievements of her clients that graduated from college; earned various certificates and licenses to practice and work in various fields from nursing to trucking and more. She valued her colleagues as they worked for the betterment of Richland and Morrow Counties. Bettie’s loving, peaceful and quiet spirit hid her powerful determination and future outlook. More than anything else, she cherished her personal relationship with The Almighty and time spent with family and friends. Her sons’ friends knew that they were always welcome. She drew a crowd when she prepared her delicious seafood gumbo. Bettie could always be seen shopping with her sister Ann. At home, she controlled the remote control and enjoyed watching college and professional football with her husband and was an avid Ohio State University and Cleveland Browns fan. She loved the Cavs but, wherever LeBron James played, that became her favorite team. Having joined under the leadership of Pastor Verdell Larson, she was a member of Providence Baptist Church, in Mansfield Ohio- Pastor Mark Cobb and Mercy Seat of God Outreach Ministries, when in Richmond, VA- Pastor Reuben Aghedo & Pastor Lillian Aghedo while she nurtured her granddaughters and spend time with her family. With her husband, Bettie supported the local branch of the NAACP and Police Athletic League (PALS). She often reflected on the fun that she had at the Police Athletic League’s (PALS) baseball events that her son participated in and their mission of helping families prepare for school. Donations to both or either organization, on her behalf, is appreciated. She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Griffin; grandparents and adoptive parents, Mattie and Chester Griffin; mother-in-law Roberta Jones Booth; father-in-law, Talbert S. Oh how I will miss my dear sweet sister-in-law Bettie. She was a platinum sister, diamond aunt, and pure gold as my dear friend. Bettie always had a laugh, a smile, and a word of encouragement for me and my family. I so admired her even temper, sweet nature, and generous heart. Losing her is a major loss.

Sending all of my love to her beloved husband, and my big brother Talbert, as well as Kyle, Stephanie and their sweet angels.

Dear Brother-in-law (and Uncle) Talbert, Kyle & Stephanie and family:

I am so sorry to hear that sister (Aunt Bettie) has transitioned on to be with the Lord.
Bettie was one of the most kind and generous women I know. She was a pillar in the Jones family, and she will be missed. Bettie was an enormous support for me, as a young wife, and then an outstanding source of support once I became a mother. Most memorable, was when she and Talbert took my daughter (niece) shopping for her freshman year of college, and moved her into her dorm at Denison University, when her dad and I had to work, and couldn’t be there! What an amazing expression of love, Haley still talks about, to this day.
I am so grateful for Bettie’s life, for her unconditional love, her sense of humor, and her iron clad strength. These qualities have been a perfect example of how to lead fiercly as a woman. I love you forever, sister Bettie! Thank you for the gift of your life. My deepest sympathy to Kyle and Talbert.
All my love,

Condolence from Destiny Johns on December 19th, 2020 11:17 am

Hey my beautiful Aunt. I will truly miss you. I’m so glad you got to meet your great nephews. You were such a beautiful woman. I loved your honesty and how you liked things the way you liked things lol. You introduced us to Gabe’s and ever since that’s been me and my mama’s spot. I love you and am thankful of all the memories we have. Thank you for being a great Aunt, mother, wife, grandma etc.

The world has lost a great truth teller and you know we are running low on truth tellers in this day and age. Betty was also a woman of action, not a talker. She was a problem solver, but not an enabler. She was compassionate but at the same time didn’t take any mess. Many of us could learn for here because she carried herself with class and dignity. And don’t let her quietness fool you, when she spoke it was powerful and that’s why she didn’t have to be long -winded. And thank goodness, because her husbands is long-winded enough for the entire family. LOL Betty was an earthly angel and my cousin was blessed to be with her for 4 decades. Love you cousin Talbert and my condolences to you and Kyle & Stephanie.
