Charles Alston

Charles was born September 26, 1946 to Mary Lyons and Charles Alston in Columbus, Ohio. He is the oldest of two children with his twin sister Charlene Taylor being born minutes after. Charles graduated from East High School in 1965. He attended OSU and Franklin University. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from General Motors after 30 years of dedicated service.

He met his beautiful bride and wife Darlene Alston at East High school and they later married in 1973. Today Charles and Darlene celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary.

Charles loved playing the piano and organ for churches in his community. He was a dynamic vocalist and loved sharing the gift of his beautiful voice. He was lovingly known as Chicken Charlie by his friends and coworkers at General Motors.

Charles is preceded in death by his stepfather James Lyons, his father Charles Alston, special Aunt Grace Hunter Henderson and many other aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife Darlene Alston, his mother Mary Lyons, his sons James Daniels (Tracy) and Charles Alston, III (Charlene), his twin sister Charlene Taylor, his nephew Michael Walters (Christina) and niece Charmaine Powell, 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, a host nieces and nephews.

Visitation 11:00 AM and Funeral Service 12:00 PM Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at New Covenant Believers Church, 3400 Kohr Blvd 43224

Interment at Glen Rest

Sincere condolences to Darlene and the family in the passing of Charles. I was blessed to have known them since the early 1980’s when we sung together in the Majestic Choir at Rehoboth Temple Church, and recently they were a vital part of “The Keepin’ Hymns Alive” singing group. Charles and Darlene were some of the “classiest and sweetest people I’ve ever known” Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

To the family of Charles Austin. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Charles. We attended Rehoboth Temple church many years ago and sang in the choir together. I remember Charles to be very outgoing who seem to always have a smile on his face. It has been many years since I saw him but I will always remember him as a very nice person. May God carry you through and give you the peace that passes all understanding. So sorry again for your loss.
