DaCorey Hurdle, Sr

HurdleDaCoreySr

DaCorey Kenyatta Hurdle, Sr., affectionately known to friends and family as “Corey” and to some as “Pops,” was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 17, 1973, to Karen Hurdle Mahone. He attended Brookhaven High School, where he played varsity basketball as a freshman. He also started varsity as a true fundamental point guard in his Sophomore and Junior years. He later graduated from Walnut Ridge High School in Columbus, Ohio.

Corey was a big sports fan. His favorite teams were the Cincinnati Bengals, the Los Angeles Lakers, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. He coached little league football for many years, first with the Eastside Tigers in 2003, and in 2005 he and two friends started a new little league football team called the Columbus Steelers. He was on the founding board of the junior Cavs basketball league in 2010. He also was a boys’ basketball assistant coach for Eastmoor Academy Middle School.

Corey was also a big-time Hip Hop music fan, known for playing his music very loud and screaming over the music in order to be heard. Some of his favorite artists were KRS One, A Tribe called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, The Lox, Nas, and Jay-Z. He was well known for sayings like “WORD,” “We ain’t playing, like that,” or in his more recent years, “You Gotta Relax.” He was such a disciplined, well-organized, neat freak, serious but funny, and most importantly, a loving people person.

The highlights of his life began with his mother and grandmother, whom he called “G”. Corey truly loved his sister, his kids, grandkids, and his girlfriend. He loved all of his friends, which to him were not just friends but his brothers. If you were his friend and he had love for you, he was a true rider. He would be down for anything with you, no questions asked; that was just Corey. Often, he would say, “If you’re right, I’m with you, but if you ain’t right, I’m still with you, but we’re going to talk about it later, LET’S GO”.
Corey, peacefully in his sleep, transitioned from this life into the arms of the Heavenly Father on March 6, 2022. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Gertrude Hurdle; and father, Reginald “Butch” Mahone, III.

Corey is survived by his mother, Karen Hurdle-Mahone; stepdad, Willard Parnell; sister, Danielle Hurdle; half-sister, Teresa Armstrong; his love, Shameka Phillips; children, Jovan Moore, Dymonica Hurdle, Mary (Jamaal) Woodson, and DaCorey (Dae Jhi) Hurdle, Jr.; grandchildren, Iya Hurdle, Israel Hurdle, Aubrey Woodson, Aaron Woodson, and Avery Woodson; special friends/brothers, Byrd Prillerman, Shinda Prillerman, LaShawn Ervin, and Edwin Vasquez; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation 1:00pm and Funeral 2:00pm Thursday, March 24, 2022 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE NORTH, 2500 Cleveland Ave.
