DOROTHY EMOGENE WOODEN was born June 25. 1921, in Chatsworth, Georgia, to Oscar
Wofford and Mammie Gilbert. Surrounded by her loving family and friends in the comfort of her
home, Dorothy got her wings and went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 29,
2018. She lived the early part of her life in Dalton, Georgia with her mother and grandmother. When Dorothy was seven years old she lost her mother. She was left to raise herself from the age of 14 after the death of her grandmother. Dorothy supported herself by working as a Domestic Worker. After moving to Columbus, Ohio at the age of 18, Dorothy started working as a machine operator for Timken Roller Bearings Inc. Company. She retired after working for 25 years with this same company.

Dorothy was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio. After leaving Shiloh

Baptist Church, Dorothy began attending Rescue Mission Church of God in Christ (COGIC)
under the leadership of the late Elder and Missionary Talbert. One day in the stillness of her home, Dorothy heard a voice so distinctly ask the question, “you were to die now, where would you spend eternity?” She asked her mother-in-law the Late Mother Cotty King, “What must I do to be saved?”

In 1956, Dorothy was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost at the Rescue Mission COGIC. Sister Wooden became a licensed Church of God in Christ Missionary in 1958. She later went on to become a licensed COGIC Evangelist, holding revivals across the country where many souls were saved, delivered and healed.

She lived a vibrant life in Columbus and her employment at the Timken Roller Bearings Inc.
Company afforded her the opportunity to purchase her own car, furs and live a successful life as
a single woman. While enjoying her past-time entertainment, bowling, Dorothy met the love of
her life, The Late George A. Wooden. (married41 years) She married her sweetheart, Woody, on
November 23, 1955. From this union was Franna Denise Hill (a.k.a. Gina) and the Late Petra
Yvette Hill. When George A. Wooden was called to the ministry, they moved to Delaware, Ohio and started Eaton Street Church of God in Christ. They later returned to the Columbus area and
changed the name to Mt. Calvary Church of God in Christ, which is in existence today.

LEGACY
Mother Dorothy E. Wooden was a life-long member of the Church of God in Christ with over 50
years of service and experience. She served nationally as the Vice President for the State of Ohio
Interdenominational Pastor’s and Minister’s Wives and Widows Alliance. Mother Wooden
served under the Late Dr. Mattie Moss Clark as a National Choir Marshal for the Church of God
in Christ National Choir. On the State level of the Church of God in Christ, she was appointed
the State Minister of Music for Southern Ohio Jurisdiction under the Late Bishop ¥.E. Perry. Mother Wooden served on the Ordination Board for Missionaries under state mothers, the Late
Mother Bell and Mother Thompson.

On the District level, Mother Wooden served as a District Missionary for Delaware, Ohio under

the Late Bishop Fields and District Missionary of the Mansfield District, Southern Ohio
Jurisdiction. She served as the Minister of Music for the Thessalonian District, Columbus, Ohio
(Southern Ohio Jurisdiction). Most recently, Mother Wooden served as the District Mother for
the Capital City District under the leadership of Superintendent, Dr. Robert L. James.

Locally, Mother Wooden served as Co-Founder and Mother of Mt. Calvary Church of God in
Christ, the former First Lady, Musician (piano player), President of Sunshine Band, President of
Sunday School Teacher. During the 1970’s, the Mt. Calvary Choir under her leadership made

guest appearances on Channel 10 News, Columbus, Ohio. Mother Wooden would hold 12:00
the Choir, President of the Prayer and Bible Band: President over the Women’s Board
noon day prayer everyday at Mt. Calvary until 1997.

Bishop Edward T. Cook, Prelate of Ohio North First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Church of God
In Christ and the 5000 PLUS members of Ohio North gave special recognition to Mother Wooden on March 18, 2016. Bishop Cook proclaimed that day as Mother Dorothy E. Wooden Day.

Things You Might Not Know:
Mother Dorothy E. Wooden was a recording artist. She recorded her first gospel CD, Moments of
Praise. Elder and Mother Wooden were foster parents for Franklin County. Mother Wooden
started the Annual Valentine’s Day Benefit Dinner, which was held in luxury hotels throughout
the City of Columbus. This dinner included fashion shows, live entertainment from well-known
gospel singers; and radio and television personalities. She was an avid bowler for many years,
scoring close to a perfect score every game, and was on many bowling leagues traveling to
different States. She loved her daily cup of Pepsi and sometimes lemonade. Mother Wooden is
known in various states for her famous cooking, especially her signature recipe for cabbage. You
would often find Mother Wooden dropping nuggets of knowledge. She would say, “Tm living on
comp time, because God has already promised me the years that He stated.” Mother Wooden is a
Breast Cancer Survivor. She would often sign over her full paycheck to Mt. Calvary COGIC to
help keep the Church going. She would call the women of Mt. Calvary “Her Crows” because she
said the Crow is the most beautiful bird, with multiple colors under the feathers. She was known
throughout for her beautiful anointed voice for singing the songs of Zion. She was at one time a
member of the Eastern Star Masonic Order.
We commend Mother Wooden for her outstanding servitude and stewardship; we salute you as
friend, and sister in the gospel.
