Elvelenar “Link” Hagwood went home to be with the Lord on February 20, 2023. Born in Boissevain, Virginia on June 17, 1928, she passed peacefully at home at age 94.

Affectionately known as “Link”, Evelyn Royal married James C. Hagwood and gave birth to six children. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and a member of Temple of Compassion Cathedral until she was no longer physically able.

Link was a devoted wife and worked hard for her family. While primarily a homemaker most of her marriage, she was employed during various times at Ohio Savings and Loan, Lazarus and Ameriflora. Her work ethic was unmatched.

Mother Hagwood was a proud grandmother who spent time and took care in helping raise her grandchildren. She truly loved attending church. Worshipping the Lord, clapping her hands in praise and listening to gospel quartets were always her remedy for troubling times. Evelyn enjoyed dressing up and was always dressed to perfection in her elaborate hats, sequined suits and eye-catching shoes.

All who knew Evelyn admired her electrifying personality and “tell it like it is” spit fire spirit. Her wisdom, advice and perspectives on life were priceless and well respected.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband; James C. Hagwood, parents; James and Mary Royal, siblings; Calvin B. Royal Sr. and Alice V. Cornett, sons; Napoleon and Wayne Hagwood, and 2 daughters; Linda Hernandez, JoAnn Stinson.

Loving memories to be cherished by daughters; Darnell (Philip) Fisher and Carla Faye Jackson, grandchildren; Nathaniel Hagwood, Renee West, LaMarr (Yvonne) Fisher, Malone (Melinda) Stinson, David Fisher, Yolanda West, Abiona (Rodric) Harper, Shimell Hagwood, Kizzma Alexander and Felicia (Gregory) Green along with a host of great grand-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation 11:00 AM and Funeral Service 12:00 PM Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Living Waters Christian Fellowship, 1824 Cleveland Ave.

Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Condolences for the family of “Elvelenar Hagwood”

Condolence from Vaughn and Linda Dodridge on February 22nd, 2023 3:21 pm

Evelyn was such a blessing. When I would ask her how she’s doing she would always say, “I’m fine, I’m not going to complain, and I don’t worry about nothing” because she relied solely on God every day. No matter what the day brought for her, good or bad, she was truly content in ALL things. Even during a long stay in the nursing home, she didn’t lose her joy or that beautiful smile. She lived every day with God’s peace that passes all understanding. What a perfect example of true faith she imparted to me. I will be forever grateful for her friendship and look forward to the day I see her smiling face again. Prayers that God will give her family the same peace that passes all understanding during this difficult time.

Condolence from Shelley Ravenel Jones on February 23rd, 2023 12:10 pm

Auntie, I will always love you and I will miss you immensely but I will never forget your sweet voice and your loving smile. You fought a good fight and now you have earned your Angel Wings so spread them wide to help protect, lead, and guide us. My childhood and adulthood memories of you will never be obliterated and I will forever cherish all memories of your love for your family.
Family, God’s word is true; He will never leave us nor forsake us. I am praying God will hold each of us with His mighty right hand.
