MayeEmily

EMILY JEAN MAYE, affectionately known as “Jean” to many, was the youngest of 10 children born to the late William and Emmaline Brown in Switchback, West Virginia. In 1946, she graduated from Aracoma High School, Logan, West Virginia.

As a teenager, Emily was baptized after she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. In 1990, she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend Odell Waller. Before her health failed, she was a member of the Missionary Ministry, Pastor’s Service Ministry, Church School, Kitchen Committee, Church Anniversary Committee, and Women’s Day Chorus. In 2007, she was an honoree of the Legends of Tabernacle (women who labored in the Lord throughout their 70+ years).

After 30 years of employment, Emily retired as a Dietetic Supervisor at The Ohio State University. She later worked for an additional 20 years as a housekeeper for a prominent family of the community.

Emily’s great-grandchildren, Keylon and Keymarra, who she called Komo and Maudi Sue, were an amazing source of pride and joy. She took pleasure in hanging out with them. Emily enjoyed walking and was a member of the former walking club that was formed at Tabernacle Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her warm smile, hearty laughter, and caring spirit.

On February 6, 2020, Emily answered the call to leave her earthly home to be with the Lord. She is predeceased by her infant grandson, Joseph Kelly Richards; parents, late William and Emmaline Brown; brothers, William Brown, Jr., Lawrence Brown, and Emmett Brown; sisters, Cleo Barnes, Virginia B. Douthet, Ernestine Alexander, Ruby Taylor, and Dorthea Martin.

Precious memories of Emily will be forever treasured by her daughter, Dorothy Ann Richards; grandchildren, Kenric Richards and Keylee (Marshall) Draper; great-grandchildren, Keylon L. Richards, Marshon Lanier, and Keymarra Draper; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation 10:00am and Funeral 11:00am Friday, February 14, 2020 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2188 Woodward Ave.

Interment at Northlawn Memory Gardens.

To the family, although it is impossible to see beyond your pain, may you look back to good memories to comfort and help you today and in the years to come. We know death is not an end but a transition from earth to heaven. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

To the Richards and Draper Families,it is with much sadness that I learned of the passing of Ms. Jean Mays. As a little girl growing up Ms. Jean was such a nice, kind person whom I would see at family gatherings. What a beautiful person to know. Ms. Jean was a quiet, warm person who I never remembered raising her voice in anger at anyone. To my beautiful cousin Dorothy, my prayers are with you during this most difficult time. Please remember all the beautiful memories you shared with her. Our Bible tells us “To be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord” (2 Corthians 5:8). Ms. Jean is only resting. We shall see her again. Please know God loves you all.
May the love of God sustain you.

Respectfully Submitted

Dorothy Ann, thank you for being that kind of daughter to that kind of mom. Let the moments, the laughter, the joys, the ups and downs live within your very being, may it bring forth great peace. You and Aunt Jean were more than sisters, you were friends. Hold on to those things, the lovely, the honorable, and the pure: for in them you will find peace, grace and strength you need to carry on.
