Ethel B. Garner was born in Norfolk, Virginia to the late William Carter and Lenora Brown. She had two sisters, Marie Hicks and Mariah Ballard. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and Norfolk State where she majored in education. She taught school for many years while serving as church organist at First Baptist Church of Norfolk, Virginia, where she was a devoted member until relocating to Columbus, Ohio.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Historical First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Norfolk VA. She was involved in various youth activities as well as music and was a delegate for her church at the Baptist Convention and the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention. She served as musician for the Gospel Choir and assistant musician for the Chancel and Youth Choir. All music was played and sung by the pipe organ of the church.

Upon moving to Columbus, Ohio the family united with the Gay Street Baptist Church, now known as Tabernacle Baptist Church. She served as church secretary and was the Minister of Music. She re-organized the Civic Organization of East Columbus and served as the president. She is a former teacher of the Union Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, and retired from the Ohio Department of Human Services as a teacher/trainer.

Other affiliations includes: Organist Guild Workshop of Hampton Institute, Piano Studies at Capital University, Teacher of Music at the Eastern Union Bible College, Instructor for the Ohio Baptist General Convention Women’s Auxiliary workshop, Musician for the Ohio Baptist Convention Parent Body and Women’s Auxiliary, Musician for the Women’s Auxiliary of Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, Woman of the Year for the Eastern Union Missionary Baptist Women’s Auxiliary, member of the Women’s Association of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra as well as Chairman of the East Unit of said association, Rose of Sharon #8 OES, Queen Elizabeth Court #1, Heroines of Jericho, St Catherine Council #1 Crusaders, Musician of the National Masonic Choir and National Heroines of Jericho. A driven woman who loved to share what God had given her to help others enhance their abilities and strengthen their character for God’s Glory.

Ethel B. Garner affectionately known as “EB” & “Grannie” was preceded in death by her parents: William Carter and Lenora Brown, husband – Leroy Garner, sister – Marie Hicks.

Visitation 11:00am and Home Going Service 12:00 noon Friday December 7, 2018 at Corinthian Baptist Church 3161 E. 5th  Ave.

I have good memories of when she came to visit with Darrah and Eugene when they were younger and we lived in Tacoma, WA and her present at Darrah’s graduation in LA was a real treat.     To the Garner and Patterson Family, I would like to offer my condolences, Mother Garner will be greatly missed. We remember the time she came to visit her 2 grandchildren (Darrah & Eugene) when we lived in Tacoma, WA, also her visit to LA for Darrah’s Graduation, that was a real treat for us all.
