Flora J. Scales, age 86. Sunrise March 4, 1932 and Sunset September 16, 2018.

Flora J. Scales was born the 11th child of George and Amanda Dudley on March 4, 1932 in Bessemer, Alabama. She shared this birth date with her older brother Walter Dudley. She was the last matriarch of the Dudley family.

At age 21, she moved to Columbus, Ohio to be with her sister Mary. Flora’s precious gifts were her children Sharon, Tami, and Derrick. She met and married Leonard Scales and they were married until his death in 1978.

Flora worked and was devoted to her job at the post office for over 30 years retiring in 1992. Flora and a friend were one of the first females to work for the United States Postal Service in Columbus, Ohio.

Flora was an avid reader as a small child, she grew a passion to read because she could escape and visit any place through a book. As an adult she never lost that love of reading. She loved to travel and went on many cruises. Traveling to places like Hawaii, the Bahamas and the Caribbean Islands.

One hobby she also enjoyed was coin collecting which she shared with her granddaughter Kristiauna.

Flora was certainly the keeper of records for the family. She knew every birthday and telephone number by heart, and if you ever wanted the family history, she was proud to share it.

Flora believed firmly in trusting the Lord with all your heart and not leaning on your own understanding. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for 35+ years until she was unable to attend.

Although she was a tough cookie she was a stabling force for her entire family and close friends and a giver to her core. She would give the shirt off her back if you needed it.

In her last days you could find her eating cheerios and laughing with the new light of her life her great grandchild Legacy Grace.

Flora is preceded in death by parents, George and Amanda Dudley; husband, Leonard Scales; brothers, George, Robert, James, and Walter; and sisters, Lula, Fannye, Ethel, Louise, Mary, and Dannye.

Flora leaves to cherish her memory, children, Sharon Dudley, Tami Dudley, and Derrick Dudley; grandchildren, Kristiauna (Tony) Lattimer and Gregory Dudley; great granddaughter, Legacy Grace Lattimer; and a host of wonderful nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
