Freeman Larry Howell, age 66, transitioned from mortal to eternal life on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, Columbus, Ohio, at the Crown Pointe Care Center. Freeman was the seventh of eight children born to the union of Reverend Clyde and Vera M. (Tisby) Howell, on September 20, 1955, Columbus, Ohio. Freeman was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings:

Being raised in a Christian household where church attendance was the norm and obtaining a personal relationship with Christ was strongly encouraged, Freeman accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at an early age at the Sigsbee Avenue Church of God, under the pastorate of Elder Edward Bridges. Freeman flourished in this congregational setting where he enjoyed music and served as a member of the youth choir.

Freeman attended Linden McKinley High School, and then joined the United States Marine Corps (USMC). Determined to complete his secondary education, Freeman accomplished this goal and received his GED through the Chillicothe Veterans Administration. Freeman was a soldier indeed! The military was an integral part of his life, and one of his proudest accomplishments; and this devotion to military service was a source of pride for his family as well.

As a young man, Freeman loved and admired his older brother, Max, who was also a Marine veteran. So, of course Freeman wanted to follow in his big brother’s footsteps. Although Max explained to his younger brother how tough the Marine Corps was and suggested to Freeman that he join a different military branch. However, Max quickly realized that Freeman was not to be swayed, so, he decided to fully support Freeman’s firm decision to join the USMC. During the next six years Freeman served his country and completed his military assignment with an honorable discharge while stationed in Parris Island, South Carolina.

After returning home from the military, Freeman worked with his father in the family business: Howell’s Landscaping, for several years until he became ill.

Freeman leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and loyal sister, Ann Verdine; sisters-in-law, Emma Howell and Candice Howell of Columbus, Ohio; nieces, Sheila (Chris) Martin of North Carolina, Sheryl (Daniel) Douglas, Kaltimba Howell and Sherada Cannon of Columbus, Ohio and LaToya (Michael) Cox of Potomac, Maryland; nephews, Maurice E. Cannon, II, John Howell; great nieces, Micole (Raheem) Brooks of Avondale, Arizona, Adriana (Jason) Dawson, Maurissa Skelton, and Hattie Cannon; great nephews, Jontae Hudson, Maurice E. Cannon, III, and Jewell Cannon, Malik Douglas and a host of other relatives and friends.
