EskridgeGloria

Gloria Jean Eskridge, affectionately called Jean, was born in Hazard, Kentucky to Luther and Lucy Jackson on June 29, 1946. She transitioned from this life on May 24, 2022, at age 75 in Columbus, Ohio where she lived most of her life.

When she was a young child, her parents moved to Columbus, Ohio. Here she attended and performed well in the public schools, graduating from Central High School.

Jean was an accomplished musician. She sang beautifully and learned to play the piano as a young child at the Neighborhood House. She pursued musical studies at Capital University.

Jean was a lifelong member of Love Zion Baptist Church, where she was baptized. For several years she served as the church secretary.

Jean played piano for both the Male Chorus and the Mass Choir at Love Zion. Jean co-created “Voices of Zion” – a vocal group that had many accomplishments including its outreach work at the women’s prison; performance on the Eddie Sanders radio show; and its annual Easter musical cantata.

In addition, many churches, programs, and events have engaged her musical talents including Mt. Caramel Community Baptist Church, Calvary Tremont, Antioch Baptist Church, The First AME Zion Church, and Serenity Baptist Church. For the past eight years she served as a pianist for Bethany Christian Church.

In 1965 Jean married Fred Eskridge, and they were blessed with three children, Dorothy Jean (1966), Fredina Lee (1968), and Fred, Jr. (1972).

Throughout her life, Jean showed an exceptional commitment to her family members, as siblings and other relatives often turned to her for wise counsel. She lovingly cared for her mom in the last years of her mothers’ life and generously uplifted generations of family members. She was extraordinarily dependable and fiercely loyal. Her life was full of honorable deeds – excessive talking was not necessary.

In addition to service as church secretary, Jean’s employment included working in the Ohio State University Hospital admitting office and service as a dispatcher for the Columbus Police Department. Following more than a decade of service, Jean retired from a management position with the United States Postal Service.

Jean was preceded in her homegoing by her daughter, Fredina Williams; parents, Lucy and Luther Jackson; six of her seven siblings, Luther, Henry, Robert, Benjamin, Ruth, and Sandra Kay; and grandson, TyKeem.

Jean leaves to mourn, sister, Elizabeth Barbour; devoted children, Dorothy “Dee Dee” Jean Stills and Fred “Duke” (LaToya) Eskridge; son -in-law, Dwayne Williams; a very special person in her life, Taleesha “Tee” Fields; ten grandchildren, LaKisha, Cheniqua, Shannah, Vashtin, LaKeisha and Dwayne Keyvon, Tiairia, Tanessa, Venicia, and K’Shamir; and a host of great grandchildren, beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation 11:00am and Funeral 12:00pm Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at Bethany Christian Church, 1130 East Livingston Ave.
