George Mitchell Walker, Age 80. Sunrise January 24th, 1936 in Miami, FL and Sunset November 21, 2016, at Riverside Hospital in Columbus Ohio. George was a devoted member of Ss. Augustine & Gabriel Catholic Church in Columbus. After 27 years of working Association George M. Walker Sr. retired as the Assistant Director of St. Stephen’s Community House where he started working in 1974. He has a Masters of Arts Degree from Central Michigan University, a Bachelor of Science Degree from Franklin University, Majored in Public and Business Administration. George Walker Sr. is also a licensed Social Worker with the State of Ohio. He has also been an Assistant Instructor at John Carroll University. Walker served as a past President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity from 1994 – 1995 as well as 1995 – 1996. Walker was a Light Weapons Instructor in the United States Army serving in Vietnam from 1971-1972, Walker served in the US Army for 20 years retiring in 1974 as a Sergeant First Class, and was award the Sliver Star, 2 Bronze Stars with V, an Army Meritorious Medal, as well as the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Combat Infantry Badge. George Walker Sr. was service Man of The Year (Central Ohio Region) 1969 and is a native of Miami Florida. George Walker Sr. was the Chairman-Elect of South Linden Area Commission and also served as President of The Linden Eagles Youth Athletic Association and the Archie Griffin Youth Athletic Association of Little League Football of Central Ohio, The Archie Griffin Football League, was renamed the George Walker Football League in Honor of his service, He was one of the First Boy Scouting leaders that South Linden ever had, he did all this through his son’s participation in scouting. Walker is the Founder of the Linden Operation Pride Task Force, which had organized and headed since 1989. Walker is a past Columbus School Board member, as well a Christmas in April Volunteer. He was active in North Kiwanis and the American Legion. Individual Awards consist of Enrollment into the Veterans of Ohio Hall of Fame in 1998, Recipient of the 2000 Community Service Award at the Governor’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and recipient of Roosevelt Carter Community Service Award of St. Stephen’s in 1991.  He was preceded in death by His Wife Joycelyn Elizabeth Walker parents David Walker, and Minnie E Dukes – Smithson, Sister Melrose Walker Robinson, Left to cherish his memory, children, George M. (Beverly) Walker Jr., Bertram (Flossie) Walker, Angelo A. (Marlena) Walker, Sylvia E. (Kelvin) Jones and Jerome J. Walker, Sister Diane Smithson, Grandchildren Joycelyn (Wesley) Walker Reese, George Walker III, Ryan Bray-Walker, Natasha Walker, Angelo Walker Jr. Alexis Walker, Great Grandchildren Jaionsa Walker, Janaya Walker. A host of nieces and nephews, great and great- great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends 5-9 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2016, at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE, 2500 Cleveland Ave. Funeral service 10 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2016, at Ss. Augustine & Gabriel Catholic Church, 1550 E. Hudson Street. Interment at Glen Rest Memorial Estate.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Walker’s passing. My condolences to his family during this difficult time. I worked with Mr. Walker at Stephen’s Community House many years ago. He was a delight to work with and a kind and gracious man. I have many fond memories of him.

My deepest sympathy to the family. I have worked at another Settlement House for over 25 years and Mr. Walker was a mentor and role model to so many. He has left a huge legacy to live by.
