BeltonHattie

Hattie (Eva Williams) Belton, was lovingly known as Nana. She was born on Monday, May 23, 1921 in Eutaw, Alabama. Due to her mother laboring int the night with twins (Hattie and Mattie), the midwife was unable to register their birth until Tuesday, May 24, 1921. She was one of twelve children born to Pinkey Donaldson.

Hattie was baptized at the age of eight in Eutaw, Alabama at Bethlehem Baptist Church. She received a primary education but was educated through life experiences. She was married at age 16 to Phillip Belton. Their union was blessed with two beautiful daughters, Patricia (Harris) and Eliza Belton. After the death of their beloved daughter Eliza, they relocated to Columbus, Ohio in 1947. She was gainfully employed for 16 years at 6rossmans & Sons.

Hattie enjoyed her life to the fullest. She was bluntly honest and extremely outspoken. She loved music, dancing, traveling, gardening, going to casino, cooking, and sending time with family. Her motto was “A lady should always smell good, look good, have nails done, hair done, and have eyebrows on fleek.” Before the death of her twin sister, Hattie and Mattie would spend hours on the phone gossiping about everything and everyone.

Hattie loved car trips and seeing the world. As soon as she returned home from one trip she would ask, when are we leaving again? When out and about, Hattie would always say “I’m trying to catch a bird.” For those of you who were not aware of what type of Bird she is referring to…it’s a MAN. She loved animals and had many throughout her life.

Hattie departed this life on August 20,2020 the way she lived, surrounded by her loving family.

Hattie was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Phillip Belton; daughter, Eliza Belton; great grandchildren, James Lacey and Michelle Smith; parents, Pinkey Donaldson and Willie Williams; siblings, Betty Taylor, Minnie Moore, Sarah Belton, Robert Childress, Wilson Childress, and twin sister, Mattie Ware.

Hattie leaves to cherish her memory, daughter, Patricia Harris; grandchildren, Phillipa (Felton) Davis, Phillip (Jessica) Smith, Hattie Cage, Russell (Chaffon) Smith, and Patrick Harris; 26 great grandchildren, Dezerie, Senobia, Jasmin, Armond, Cassaundra, Porche, Phillip, Martenez, Derrick, Daniele, Devante, Christopher, Chante, Dalvin, Tamia, Phillip, Santwan, Donte, Radasia, Nelson, Russel, Unishyis, Breonna, Patrick, Amir, and Nyzere; 24 great grandchildren; sister, Annie Lee Underwood, Columbus, Ohio, Virginia Jenkins, Bernice (Walter) Jenkins, and Willie (Mary Helen) Coleman from Baltimore, Maryland, Jestina Farmer, Vance, Alabama; the favorites (you know who you are); and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Private Services entrusted to MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE NORTH, 2500 Cleveland Ave.

Mrs. Belton was a wonderful neighbor. We became friends after I moved on Hildreth and we traded plants and enjoyed long conversations. She was a beautiful soul. After she moved we ran into each other a couple of times and the love was still there. I did’nt read this until Monday. I am sorry to hear of your loss. You had a beautiful grandmother and Nana.
