Hildagard Ruth Gardner-Turner was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 9, 1937, to George H. and Anna Mae Gardner. She gained her wings on Monday, March, 26, 2022 in the comfort of her home. At an early age Hilda attended Calvary Tremont Baptist Church where she accepted her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was baptized, under the leadership of the late Reverend William James Payden.

Hildagard was educated in the Columbus School System. She was a graduate of Columbus East High School before enrolling in Capital University where she studied Music. In 1953 Hildagard eloped with Edward Leon Turner in Indianapolis Indiana. From this union one beautiful daughter was born Veronica “Ronnie” Gardner Thornton. The two later exchanged their vows in beautiful ceremony before God, family and friends on June 18, 1955.

In 1955 Hildagard started working at The Ohio State University as a Food Service Manager, before she became employed with St. Anthony Hospital in 1959, serving in what would become a long term career position as the Assistant Director of Food and Nutrition for 33+ years.

Hildagard was affectionately known as Hilda, Mommy, Granny, and GG (which is short for Great Grandmother and later short for Great, Great Grandmother) Hilda was very intentional about the love and support she extended to her family as she was one who wholeheartedly believed a family that prays together stays together. Matthew 18:20 (NIV) For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” She was very passionate about cooking for her family, taking care of her plants, completing crossword puzzles, traveling, and reading. Hildagard’s most prize possession was her family, she especially enjoyed spending time with her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Her unconditional love for her daughter, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren had no boundaries. Her pride and joy was her great, great grandsons who took great care of her every day.

Hildagard is preceded in death by her parents, George H. and Anna Mae Gardner; brothers, Frank Brown, and George Jr.; sisters, Eva, Minerva and Delores; and granddaughter, Janae Ruth.

Hildagard leaves to cherish her memory, her one and only daughter, Veronica “Ronnie” Thornton; grandchildren, Jerrica, Jeannine (James), Juane (Tyleshia), and Derrick; great-grandchildren, Daquan, Damone, Javontae, Ayris, Aryon, Juane Jr., Aliyah, James Jr. Juaira, Tyson, and Jamasia; great-great grandchildren, Mayah, Damien, Daysen, Ayden, Dalon, Zayden, Justin, and Da’Myla; nieces, Regina, Ramona, and Johnniemae; nephews, Ralph and Tony; best friend for over 60 years, Anna Frank Haire; dear friend, Evelyn “Cookie” Holiday, special family friends, Valerie and Sheneise Landrum, and Janet Kimble Smith (who was like a daughter); and a host of great nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
