James “Jimmy” Devon Weatherspoon Sr., age 56, life-long resident of Columbus, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on January 23, 2021, at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Jimmy was born on June 20, 1964, to the late Eugena Weatherspoon, and was the eldest of three children. Jimmy grew up on the East Side of Columbus and graduated from Walnut Ridge High School in 1982, where he was a well-known basketball player in Central Ohio. He also played in college and for The Swans Basketball Club in Perth, Australia.

From 1983-1985, Jimmy attended Itawamba College, Fulton Mississippi. Itawamba College is where he first laid his eyes on his future bride-to-be. Patrice kept him in the “friends” category for a year. After that year, Jimmy revealed his true feelings to Patrice and they became a couple. In 1987 Patrice transferred to Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Jimmy followed her. They had their own ‘Love & Basketball’ story. On September 7, 1991, Jimmy and Patrice were married in Columbus, Ohio. During their union, they had four gifted children; James “JD” Jr, Jasmine, Jeana, and Jejuan, Jimmy retired from the City of Columbus. He was a member of Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies where he was baptized on June 28, 2015.

Jimmy loved spending time with his family. He coached Basketball for the Whitehall Recreation Center for 3 years and he coached T-Ball for Whitehall Youth League for 11 years. When he wasn’t the head coach for his kids sports teams, they could still hear him coaching from the stand. He loved watching his 4 children play sports and succeed in their sports. He was and will always be their biggest fan. Jimmy was a huge football and basketball fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes. He was also a diehard Dallas Cowboy fan. Jimmy was an avid fan of college and professional basketball and football. He really enjoyed football season and being able to watch the games with The Douglas family and The Tanner family, along with the newest addition to the family, his grandson James D, Weatherspoon III.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Eugena C. Weatherspoon, brother, Roger Weatherspoon Sr., grandmother, Dorothy Vaulx, nephew, Roger Weatherspoon, Jr., and his life-long childhood friend, Thomas Douglas Sr.

Jimmy leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 29 years Patrice Weatherspoon; sons, James D. (RoKia) Weatherspoon Jr. and Jejuan C. Weatherspoon; daughters, Jasmine P. Weatherspoon and Jeana C. Weatherspoon; grandson, James D.
