Janis Lucille Hull, age 80, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away July 17, 2020. She was born November 5, 1939 in Rendville, Ohio, the oldest of six children, to her parents, Gilbert and Gertrude (Ashby) Mitchell.
Janis graduated from Corning High School in 1958, and moved to Columbus. There she met and married Bruce H. Hull II in 1958. They had 4 children, Bruce, Victoria, Angela, and Jeffery. After Janis and Bruce divorced in 1962, she met Thomas Kearnell, who became her long-time companion until his death in 1995. Janis and Thomas had one child together, Cheryl. Janis worked at Fort Hayes, and the Defense Construction Supply Center in Columbus. She later moved to Virginia, working for several years at the Pentagon until her retirement. Throughout her career, her dedication earned her numerous awards and commendations for her exemplary service.

Janis was a loving mother. She would regularly take the children for drives in the country after Sunday dinner, or pile everyone in the car for an evening at the local drive-in. Mom’s house, no matter where it was, was always a gathering place for friends, family, and neighbors. She greeted everyone with a smile and made them feel at home. Many referred to her affectionately as “mom”. Janis enjoyed bowling, and had participated in several bowling leagues around Columbus. She enjoyed watching Westerns on TV, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with family.

In addition to her parents, Janis was preceded in death by Thomas Kearnell, her brothers Donovan, and John, sister Brenda Palmer, grandson Daniel Floyd, nephews Albert Henderson, Anthony Bolden, and Gilbert Mitchell. She is survived by her brother Richard (Christiana) Mitchell, sister Patricia Henderson, her children Bruce (Barb) H. 9. Ruthie from Next Door

The definition of a Mother! Growing up when I was in pre-school I vividly remember turning my afternoons into play dates with “Grandma”. I remember it as my time to hang out, have snacks & garden with my best friend who I called Grandma, when in reality it was Grandma volunteering to watch me while my Mom worked. She would never miss out on drinking “buun” our Eritrean coffee in the afternoons with my grandparents and chatting away like the best of friends. A past time she would reminisce upon up until the last time I was with her.

She was always so compassionate towards me and my younger sister and embraced us as her own grandchildren. She’d seen us both grow up from next door. She was truly blessed to not only see her own children grow up and have children but their children’s children. A strong beautiful matriarch. Her loss is massive but she made us all better people by filling us with so much love.

May the journey to heaven be a peaceful one filled with light Grandma.

    all our love,
    Ruthie, Mimi & Helen ♥️✨
