A Little Sister’s Obituary

Johnny was, and continues to be my hero big brother. The I you see in me has happened because of the He you’ve seen in him. He was smarter, wiser, more clever, and definitely more creative than I ever was (what I’ve strived to be). He was my idol, I was his pain in the behind; but he always tolerated me (sometimes under penalty of parental law).

He would challenge me to foot races in the street on Grovewood Dr. Of course, he always won — I just didn’t have the wind for them. One night on the playground on our grandparents’ block, after he had hooped with the neighborhood kids, he committed to staying on the court until I made three baskets. It was after dark (there were no streetlights back then), and we got in trouble, but He waited until I made my three shots before we walked back to The House.

Mommy home-schooled both Johnny and me before kindergarten, before there was a term for it. Johnny was at a first- or rising second-grade level when he entered kindergarten at age 4 years old. Johnny also had a photographic memory (his young uncles would bet their friends that Johnny could name every make car that drove by on Barthman Ave. He did, uncles won.) Mommy and Daddy won their battles over me with the schools because of what they’d endured over Johnny.

I followed just about every footprint Johnny made: he studied a musical instrument, and so did I; he played sports in high school and college, and so did I; he studied psychology in college (Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio), and so did I. I had a certain pride in the FACT (don’t y’all try to deny it) that everyone liked Johnny more than they liked me — Johnny possessed Mommy’s loving side, I her disciplinarian personality. It was cool. I just made sure he accompanied me to most social gathering.

Johnny was the consummate big brother, father, uncle, friend. He taught my son, Christian, how to walk, took him to the park and 4th of July Fireworks. Johnny’s and Jaime’s door was open, and washer/dryer available for me to do laundry before I had machines, or just to hang out when I wanted social company. Johnny would host cookouts, movie nights on his big screen, and card games for whomever showed up.

My gratitude is immeasurable for the time I was able to spend with my brother during his life and illness. God and my thoughts are the foundation for coping with the loss. The Friday before his passing, his healthcare provider asked him what he wanted for his birthday, which was three days later. He replied, “I want to be alive.” In the most grand and heavenly sense, he was, indeed, alive!

My peace and healing have begun in 2021.
