Karen L. Rogers age 70, affectionately called Candy by family and friends, was born on December 31, 1951 to Benny L. Rogers and Edwina (Belton) Rogers, in Columbus, Ohio. She went home to be with the Lord suddenly at home on Friday, September 30, 2022.

Candy went to 11th Avenue School which is now the site of CMHA and she attended Linden McKinley Sr. High School. Candy grew up in Windsor Terrace which is now Rosewind. Rosewind is Windsor with an “E” added. She was proud of this because to her Windsor Terrace is an important part of the South Linden area that should not be lost in the name change.

Candy was a very active member of the Windsor Terrace and Rosewind Resident Councils. She actively ran the free Toys for Christmas program, the After School program for the children in the neighborhood, National Night Out and other various programs for the community. Candy worked as an AmeriCorps Vista Member through the City of Columbus where Rosewind was her site to work. She also was very instrumental in working with CMHA, the City of Columbus and the Mayor’s office with the HOPEVI program which helped with the funds to demolish Windsor Terrace Apartments and rebuild new housing which is now Rosewind today.

Candy was also business minded; she ran her own home childcare center, along with a summer time Candy store for the kids in the neighborhood. The children were able to purchase candy, snack cakes, chips, pop etc. at a discounted price. She used the money from the candy store to take her children and grandchildren to the Ohio State Fair. Though Candy liked the work she did in the community she loved her family most. She was always there for her children. The one job she took seriously was being a grandmother. Her oldest grandson Mark could not say grandma as a toddler, he said “Donnol” and it stuck. She would not allow anyone to call her grandma because she would proudly say that is not my name, my name is Donnol. Every grandchild, niece, nephew and great-grandchild called her Donnol. She made sure she was the best Donnol ever. She seen or talked with her children and grandchildren every day. If she did not hear from them she was calling around to see if everything was ok with her “Babies” it did not matter that some of her grandchildren were adults she would call the parents to ask if they heard from her grandchild.

Candy was preceded in death by her father Benny L. Rogers, mother Edwina (Belton) Rogers, brothers Anthony “Tony” Rogers, Michael Rogers & Jerald Rogers, Sister Lillian Rogers and Niece LiTasha Streeter.

Candy’s precious memories live on in the hearts of her 3 son’s Mark Rogers, Kevin Moore and Shaun Rogers; Sister Laveda Rogers; Aunt Carol Belton; 11 Grandchildren Mark Rogers Jr., Salim Rogers, N’Shea Manning, Massiah Brown, Jaylin Lane, Niyah (Seiquan) Smith, Emmanuel Bond, Kavonna Moore, Gabriel Moore, Omari Broussard and Ja’Mesha Wheeler; 9 Great-Grandchildren Mar’Kalen Rogers, Roman Rogers, Salim Rogers Jr., Ja’ire Brown, Maliik Brown, Nova Smith, Kason Smith, Jabriel Lane and Royality White; Special daughters Kimberly Smith and Nolita Manning along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Visitation 10:00am and Funeral 11:00am Friday, October 14, 2022 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE NORTH, 2500 Cleveland Ave.

Interment at Eastlawn Cemetery.
