Lavern Campbell News Paper Photo

Laverne “Lee” Campbell was born in Bay Springs, Mississippi on February 15, 1943. Lee’s childhood roots traveled from the deep south to Columbus, OH. He attended East High School and started a career in construction with Coady Construction, Inc. and then for many years with Gaddis & Son, Inc. until his retirement. Lee always loved creating masterpiece patios and driveways to the delight of his family and friends who were the recipients of his craftmanship.

Through a cousin, Lee met the love of his life and married Loretta Posey from Detroit. This union raised three loving daughters. Lee’s love for fishing was one of his ultimate joys of life. Having all girls, Lee shared his passion for fishing and taught each of them how to bait a hook. In his leisure time you would find him on a boat or the riverbank casting his reel. As an extended family, in 1982 Lee co-founded the Trojans Motorcycle Club in Columbus, OH. He wore his Trojans motorcycle vest with pride.

When Lee walked into a room he met no strangers. His charming personality would light up the entire place. Lee had a caring heart and helped so many family, friends and even strangers in need. He was humble, patient and had a sense of humor that would catch you by surprise. Lee would make sure to slide in a joke or two that stirred laughter. His patience was an armor of strength and a way to allow his positive spirit to shine.

Lee is preceded in death by his Mother Roxane Campbell and Father Tommy Rhodes. He leaves to cherish his life and legacy; Sister Rosetta Butcher and Brothers Walter Campbell, Sr. and Harry Lee Campbell of Columbus, OH; Daughters Icilda Dickerson [Jeffrey Garcia] of Columbus, OH, Jacintha (Dr. Don) Long of Cincinnati, OH, Chiquana (Robert) Hancock of Columbus, OH; Grandchildren Tonecia (Robert) House of Phoenix, AZ, Donai Long, Jailah Long, MaHalle Long of Cincinnati, OH, Darius Dickerson and Imani Hancock of Columbus, OH and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws.

I will miss my cousin, our childhood was full of life and laughter especially when Lee would show up. He always referred to himself as the Leader with the heater, the Boss with the red hot sauce lol, that was my cousin Lee. I’m so glad returning from California we were able to laugh that one more time. Fondly known as Red by aunties and Kat by cousins.
