GrayLeigh

Leigh Ann Gray, age 57. Sunrise October 16, 1963 and Sunset September 6, 2021.

Leigh Ann Gray was a gift to this world. The scriptures teach that “all good and perfect gifts come from the Father of lights,” and those who knew Leigh Ann found that she was both a gift and a light from our Father. Leigh Ann was a person of deep love, compassion, dignity, and strength. She could be both “super-spiritual” and not spiritual at all—an effortless balance of high human quality and supernatural grace. It will not be possible to forget all that she has meant to us. We are who we are today because of the ways she fervently prayed for us, loved on us, and sacrificed for us. These words are written with a heavy heart because we miss her. Leigh Ann was one of those “of whom the world was not worthy” people alongside the many faith heroes throughout history. Our grief is a weight we can only carry to the Lord, to Whom we now entrust her spirit. She lived a worthy life, a passionate commitment to her Savior and Lord, and to her family whom she poured out her heart and soul. She experienced true love, loving her husband with her whole being, a dedicated wife who wouldn’t hesitate to show her affections to the watching world. She loved her children, those born to her and those extended through marriage. She deeply loved all of her “grands” as she would call them—embracing (and even matching) all the chaos and energy they brought to her space simply because it brought her joy. To all those she called friends, she was known as a sweet spirit who wouldn’t hesitate to offer her love in various forms—words of affirmation and acts of service were her love languages.

Leigh Ann Gray was born October 16, 1963 in Columbus, Ohio to James and Leola Wilson. She grew up in a modest home on the south side near Marion Franklin High School, where she graduated high school in 1981. As she often testified, Leigh Ann would come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior at the tender age of 13 years old. She made Greater Emmanuel Apostolic Church of God her church home, later to be known as Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies Inc., under the leadership of her beloved pastor Bishop Sherman S. Watkins. There she would gain many friends and longtime church family, among whom was Billy Newman—who introduced her to a young, newly saved Arthur Gray in 1980. Shortly afterwards, “Buster” would be become her first and only love, and they were married on her birthday October 16, 1982.

Leigh Ann decided to forgo college and become a manager of the home, having children early in marriage and being present as a godly example and nurturer. She determined that her children needed to be taught the Word of God, believing that cultivating this early and often was her greatest ministry. Periodically, she would also work several jobs as needed, working as an agent at Grange Insurance Company, a teacher Brice Christian Academy, and a night auditor at a nearby Holiday Inn Express, amongst many other places. Everywhere she worked she made a significant connection with someone. She was an evangelist, and without any title or associated fanfare she would share the gospel with any person in her path.

Leigh Ann was also a world renowned soloist, singing as a lead for countless Sunday services, church conventions, and musicals throughout the years. In 1994, she was selected for an opportunity to travel Europe with an international gospel group called The Golden Gospel Singers, which traveled Germany, Sweden, France, Belgium, Austria, England and The Netherlands. She was also featured with other national recording artists for the Woman Thou Art Loosed conference, sharing the stage with Shirley Ceasar, Vicki Winans, Juanita Bynum, and others. In 1999, she would join her husband traveling with his gospel choir High Praise Company, also assisting with various administrative needs. Wherever she went, she left no doubt that she was gifted with an anointed voice. Her favorite songs were “Stand Still Until Your Will Is Clear,” “God Is,” and “He Cares.”

Later she would serve First Lady and chief administrator at High Praise International Fellowship, leading out in various capacities as organizer, elder, and women’s ministry leader. She would often host her beloved “Kingdom Ladies” retreats, where she would gain so much joy interacting with all the women she came to know and love over the years. One of her great passions was to be a mentor and example to young women, to share her story and example as often as possible. At Linden Life Fellowship, she continued in her leadership role to women as well as hosting retreats, but would find a new passion in international missions work. Leigh Ann would serve as an Executive Board member for Eyes Wide Open, a non profit organization through which she traveled to Haiti for 7 years. After her many trips, she would often spend hours talking on WhatsApp to all of the youth who were often captivated by her joy and relatabillity. She would finally become part of Fresh Wind Worship Center, joining with dear friends Pastor Lance and Lady Alette Darden.

Leigh Ann very much loved her family, cherishing her role as wife, mother, auntie, and “Mimi.” She is preceded in death by her dear mother Leola, as well as her sister Karen (Steve). She is survived by her beloved Buster, whom she loved with her whole heart, and would often say “there is no Leigh Ann without Buster.” She is also survived through her sons Taelor and Christon whom she took great pride in, as well as her beloved daughter Aubrey. She formed and cultivated special relationships with her daughters and son “in love” Cristina, Shana, Cameron, and Liz and will forever live on through her grandchildren Mya, Dionne, Levi, Chloe, Cass, Story, and Simone. She is also survived through her precious father “deacon” James Wilson, her mother and father “in love” Arthur and Carol Gray, as well as her sisters Phyllis (Eric) and Susan (Bill). Her love was extended to a host of other close friends and family, countless neices, nephews, cousins, and other “grands” she happily welcomed into her loving presence. To name everyone precious to her wouldn’t be possible, but to know Leigh Ann was to know that you were loved.

Visitation 5:00pm and Memorial Service 6:00pm Sunday, September 12, 2021 at Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies, 870 St. Clair Ave, Columbus, OH 43201.

Our spiritual sister in the Lord “You” were truly the epitome of “FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT OF FAITH”
To the family, remember her body/flesh is gone…. But she will “Forever” live on through the woven fabric of your lives. A favorite song of hers went like this…..
“Through It “all” I have learnt to “Trust” In Jesus I have learned to “depend” upon His NAME”……that was, and will remain her motto, “Trust Jesus”.
To The very end of her earthly life, her Jesus said “well done my good&faithful servant, mission/destiny accomplished, come on home”. SHE WON!

“A Divine Message on September 6, 2021”

God, I know you’re not in a hurry-
Your plans for me are on time.
You need no schedule or remainder
For I’m always on your mind.

I know you have drawn the mosaic
And you’re fitting each tile in place.
As I continue to follow your divine plan,
Help me not despair or hurry in the race.

So as my life’s pattern continues
And the next part begin to unfold,
It’s you I’m thanking and praising,
It’s your hand I cling to and hold.

Abundant Love, Prayer, Peace ♥️☮️

As I remember this awesome woman of God, I remember her as a sister, as a friend, a family member belonging to the HGAAA which was at the time we met, Greater Emmanuel. I remember the voice of a human song bird, with a passion for Christ in which I shall never forget. My heart goes out to Pastor
Arthur “Buster” Gray as I know him. My condolences to all the family, her sons and daughter, friends that knew and was blessed by her ministry. When I got the news of her sickness, and passing, it broke my heart, but God comforted me by saying., David danced before the Lord and Leigh Ann is now singing before the Lord, literally and truly before the Lord Jesus. I pray that God will give all of her family that peace in which the Bible talks about, that peace that surpasses all understanding. May God bless you all and keep you until we meet again.

Condolence from Geniss Bray on September 9th, 2021 2:58 pm

My Auntie Leigh Always made me laugh- always put a smile on my face. I guess that’s in our genetics because our family is so funny especially around each other. We really be cuttin up! She always made it a point to tell me I am beautiful. She always made Intercessory prayer on me and my family’s behalf. My aunt reminds me SO much of my mother (her older sister Karen who we lost to cancer as well some years back). Both women, songbirds! This hurts even more because of the circumstances and the triggering of my own mother’s death. They look and act so much alike so it was sometimes erie to be around my Auntie Leigh because she was like the earthly form of my mother. Oldest daughter and youngest daughter both now in heaven probably cuttin up! Those beautiful, warm smiles- Many of our family members get that same smile from these women. I have many childhood and adulthood memories of you. To say I will miss you isn’t enough. Im mad, Im sad, Im so many emotions right now. But all I can hear you say is “I love you, beautiful Geniss”. I know you would want me to find strength in the Lord and be encouraged. Im broken -but I look forward to celebrating your earthly life and your beautiful soul! I am sure we will cry but we will also laugh and cut up just how we would if you were still in our presence.

Uncle Buster/Cousins: Tae, Chris, Aubrey- I love you and am praying for you and your individual families and our family.

Dear Lord- I’m confused, frustrated, hurt and many more emotions but I am not sovereign. Thank you for sharing her with me. I know she belongs to you. Give her a hug for me please

Condolence from Jimmy Dukes on September 9th, 2021 3:28 pm

thank you God for moving dark clouds away

Condolence from Kyth and Sonya Johnson on September 10th, 2021 9:31 am

Dear Pastor Gray and Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this season. Words cannot express how sorry we are for your loss. First Lady was a gift that God shared with those who were blessed enough to come in contact with her. She had a servants heart, 100% and as First Lady of High Praise International Fellowship, she encouraged and motivated everyone to serve the Lord with excellence. She was gorgeous, gifted, anointed and HILARIOUS! She was full of experience and wisdom and although it appears that she is gone too soon, it is not the quantity of a life that matters, but the quality, and her life and legacy is FULL of quality. Now, it’s time for your crown our Dear Sister, sing with the angels and tell your story of how you made it over.

Condolence from Beverly W. Holden on September 10th, 2021 2:07 pm

Buster and my family,
I am lost for words in the passing of my dear cousin LeighAnn. I will truly miss her. Even though we didn’t talk all the time or spend a lot of time together. She was still my cousin. Whenever we talked we enjoyed each other. We often expressed the love we had for each other. I thank God for that! So Buster, Christen, Taylor, Aubrey , Uncle James, Phyllis, Susan and all the rest of my family. Hold on to Gods unchanging hand and He will make it alright.

Love always,
Beverly & Terry

Thank you, Mrs. Wilson. (Dr). Maurina and I appreciate your heartfelt condolence in the loss of my sister (and her aunt), Leigh Ann.

Leigh Ann was the first employee I hired when I first opened my dental practice in 1983. I personally trained her to be my receptionist and dental assistant. We were both very proud and excited to be working together. Leigh Ann was such a hard-worker and she was a great addition to the practice. I will always remember for her loving dedication to the success of my practice.

I pray that my baby sister is with the Lord Jesus now, resting and at peace.

God wanted you home, your job done here painted the picture of the Proverb 31 Woman, I’ll never forget the first time I heard you sing “for the good of them “Rev Milton Brunson Thompson Community Choir” at then Greater Emmanuel (NOW HIGHER GROUND AAA) The Spiritual impact that you and Buster had on my walk with God was perfectly orchestrated by the ONE who Holds you so closely now. “It will work out for the good of them who Loves the Lord”

Condolence from Bishop Ivan Carey on September 11th, 2021 10:04 pm

This has became a real shocker, still don’t want to believe it. I met Buster & Leigh Ann
When I first came to Greater Emanuel in 1983. They were the ideal couple that set such a high standard, of what it was to be young and Save. I dreamed that one day,
I to would get married and fall in love,
with my wife, the way I seen Buster love Leigh Ann. She was a good example to young women and to the body of Christ, of what it is to be a Godly woman.
My love and prayers go out to the entire family.

Sincerely,

Bishop Ivan & Lady April Carey

I will never forget you all inviting me over for dinner, as we laugh and talked. I really enjoyed our time spent. She was truly a Jewel, to the body of Christ, that will for

Condolence from Ericka Grace on September 12th, 2021 12:39 am

Things I will miss & NEVER forget about my Auntie Leigh…
❤️Her bitmoji’s
❤️Her beautiful bright smile
❤️Her INSANE sense of humor
❤️How she was the life of the party…literally
❤️How long she held on to an inside joke
❤️Her random 11pm “just thinking of you” texts
❤️Her prayers & words of encouragement
❤️How she was an amazing little sister to my Mom
❤️Her leading “He Cares” (in the rafters) as a kid
❤️The effort she put in to ensure we had a closer relationship these last few years
❤️How she checked on me constantly when I lost my baby…after the dust settled…after my grief had gotten “old” to other people… months & months & months later. And how she believed God with & for me that He was going to bless us with another child soon. And when God did it, how she celebrated like it was her OWN blessing.

Auntie Leigh, I promise to be there for my cousins…long after the dust settles…after their grief may get “old” to some…just like you were for me. And although you never did get to play that piano (app) again with Iran like you said you would in your last voice message to me, LOL..I know you’re making some beauuuuutiful music in Heaven! Kiss my baby girl for me! Thank you for being you.❤️

Condolence from Angela “Walker” Wagner on September 12th, 2021 2:12 am

My heartfelt and deepest sympathy to the Gray and Wilson Families. Leigh Ann and I grew up with one another and spent much of our childhood playing at each other’s homes. These are fond memories that I will forever cherish!!! Keeping you all lifted up in prayer

Condolence from Michael Sloan on September 12th, 2021 8:18 am

One of the favorite songs that Leigh Ann use to sing as a young lady was “I’m going up yonder“ by Walter Hawkins. If you want to know where she is and how she’s doing, the words of what she sang gives me solace. She took the pain and the heartache that it brought because she knew that she was going home. This short life that we are promised allows you to learn and trust in a loving Savior. You may have had many tears and sorrows and questions about tommorow (Andre Crouch) but try to trust that there is an all seeing God and He is there by our side ready to come to our aide. Always remember that we are just passing by in a fallen world and live in a vessel that will soon go back to the earth from where it comes. Accepting this reality and trusting in His words and the experiences that we have gives us the strength and peace that we need to live. Live until Jesus either comes back or until this body that we live in gives out. Lord I thank you for Leigh Ann and Buster and the life that they live. Yes live. While she has departed from us, she is not lost. She will always be with us. Her voice, her words and presence will always stay with us. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Lord help this us realize that you will soon come back for those who are called by your name. Lord, give us the Grace to make it until you come.

We thank Yeshua for the life and times of our dear sister Leigh Ann. She is an example of someone who walked in their destiny and fulfilled their purpose on this people planet. She always spoke her heart and laughter was always a part of her conversation. Anyone in Leigh Ann’s presence felt immediately at home. We will miss those five hour late night visits discussing every topic under the sun. We know this was an unplanned transition but is grateful for the opportunity to have known this precious Saint.

Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ is all knowing. Although his plans may not always be what we expect, we trust in knowing he knows what is best for us. He thought it was best to bring our Sister, Leigh Ann home to be at peace with him where she is no longer experiencing any pain or discomfort. We will treasure our memories of her until we see her again. I so enjoyed her wonderful singing that brought me such joy! She will truly be missed. My family is praying for the family and for you all to stay strong in the work of the Lord until you see Leigh Ann again. We send you love during this time of your bereavement.

I am devastated that we have lost this beautiful soul. I didn’t get to spend a lot of time with her, whenever I would see her or talk to her…she was always praising. It didn’t matter who was around…praise would always come out of her mouth. I could only conclude that if you wanted to see the Joy of the Lord. You had only to look at Leigh Ann Gray. I know that you are going to miss her…but how blessed the Gray family was to claim the Joy of the Lord as your very own. Praying for you all at this sad time and sending you all my love ❤️❤️❤️

LETTER TO MY LIL’ SIS’ … Leigh Ann,
I’ve been thinking about some memorable times we have shared. When you were born, Mama told us three “older” girls that we had to “look out” for you.
You probably don’t remember this, but it is as clear to me today as if it happened yesterday. Our mother was driving us four girls to Eastland Mall in our brand new, 1968, white, 2-door Cutlass Supreme Oldsmobile with red leather interior. You were only 4 years old. As we were riding along, little did any of us know what was about to happen.
I was sitting next to you on the back seat. You were leaning on the door looking out of the window when all of a sudden the door flew open and you fell out. I grabbed you as you were falling but you ended up hanging partly out of the door with your face close to the ground. After Mommy realized what happened, she put on the brakes as she veered right to get off of the road. I held on to you but you were starting to slip.
When the car stopped, your head was right in front of the rear tire. Mom knew she couldn’t put the car in “park” or it would have crushed your skull as it rolled forward. So she kept her foot on the brake, turned herself around, extended her arm back, grabbed your clothes and pulled you back into the car. We were so scared, but God gave your mother the strength, wisdom and courage to save you from any harm. I believe God had one of His angels help Mommy hold down the brake until she got you. (smile)
We were so happy and relieved that you were alright. Needless to say, we all spoiled you a lot more than usual the rest of that day. (smile)
I recall when you were age 11 or 12, you and I would talk a lot about my college experiences at Howard University and at O.S.U. You told me you wanted to be an obstetrician/gynecologist. I would always encourage you to pursue it and tell you that you could do anything you wanted to do and succeed. I told you of a dream I had of the two of us riding down the highway in your new convertible with the top down after you became Dr. Leigh Ann. These talks made you so very happy, I remember.
Although you chose a different path in life, Leigh, I am proud of your successes and of how you have shared your love with others.
When I opened my dental practice in 1983, I asked you to come work with me and you gladly accepted the invitation. You were my first first employee. I personally trained
you to be my receptionist and my dental assistant. We were both so proud and excited to work together. Leigh Ann, you were such a hard-worker and a great addition to the practice. I will always remember your sincere, loving dedication to the success of my practice.
Leigh, I hope you are with Jesus, Mommy and Karen now, resting and at peace. I cherish all of our fond memories. Until we meet again……..
Your big sis’,
Susan
P.S. Thank you for taking care of Daddy these past several years.

I am praying for the family. Mrs grays was so loving and had a sweet spirit! She would always know when my wife was pregnant and whisper it to us sometimes before we knew. I will cherish her loving memories! My condolences to the family.

Can’t believe that this has happened. I know we are not suppose to ask questions God, but Why?? Why??? I’m sorry to say this but Lord, why did you have to take such a beautiful person, a wonderful soul, full of love and life and the spirit of God, a true woman of God??? Such an angel she was to me. God why did you have to take her so soon, my best friend, confident, spiritual advisor, my true spiritual sister and non blood related. I will always remember Leigh Ann and the times we shared and I’m sorry that I took so much for granted.
Rest in God’s peace till we meet again in Heaven. Love you so much and miss you.

So sorry for the late response but just wanted to express my most sincere condolences to the family. I attended Greater Emmanuel/Higher Ground for many years. Leigh Ann came up with the incredible idea of a “holy” Halloween party for the kids. It was great! Lord that girl could “SANG!” I can still hear her singing “God Is…” to this day. May God Continue to strengthen you and your family throughout the days, months, and years to come.
