Leroy Bennett

Leroy Bennett was born August 17, 1936, the youngest of 11 children in Ocilla, Georgia to Lesley Bennett and Seymore Florence.

Leroy departed to be with the Lord on Monday January 2, 2023, at the age of 86 St. Ann’s Hospital, in Westerville, OH.

Leroy Bennett enlisted in the United States Army at age 16 and served 4 years in Italy and England. He later moved back to Ocilla, Georgia where he married Roberta Bennett, and they had three children.

Leroy moved to Columbus, Ohio in May of 1962. He began working for the Ohio Board of Education where he was employed for 5 years. He then began working for the City of Columbus, the Sanitation department for 30 years. He also worked part-time for 10 years for COTA Mainstream.

Leroy retired and picked up a hobby in wood carving. He joined The Woodshop at the Martin Janis Center where he attended until the center closed in 2020. Leroy also attended the Church of Christ where he was a Deacon, Usher and faithful member.

He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved the Lord and spending time with his family. He loved his westerns, cooking on the grill, famous for his collard greens and listening to his oldies but goodies. He will be truly missed and always loved.

He was preceded in death by mother; Lesley Bennett, father; Seymore Florence, brothers; William Bennett, Nickelous Bennett, Alton Bennett, Lloyd Bennett, Raymond Bennett, Sam Florence, Earl Florence, sisters; Ossie Bennett and Ora Bennett.

He was survived in death by sister; Delorese Lancaster, Three daughters; Gwendolyn Henson, Rhonda Bennett, Angie Smith, sons-in-law; William M. Smith III and Edward Lee Henson, grandchildren; Kanisha Johnson (David), Sharonda Henson, Tashaya Bennett, DeAndre Smith, Alexsia Smith, great-grandchildren, Lavelle Henson-Mitchell, Kayla Napper, Lanesha Henson, Marlee Young, Maya Smith, Adonis Johnson, and Dominic Johnson, special cousin; Mr. Marvin Florence, nieces and nephews; Crissy Lancaster, Annette Lancaster, and Deon Lancaster.

Visitation 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Monday, February 13, 2023, at Chapel of peace North 2500 Cleveland Ave.

Interment at Evergreen Burial Park.

Daddy you are truly missed but I know you are in a better place. I want to pick up the phone and call you but I know you won’t answer. I miss all the good times we shared and the life lessons you taught us, they will continue with me through life. You raised us girls, gave us a good life and we wanted for nothing. I thank God for loaning you to us for almost 87 years. Your family misses you and we will forever love you. You worked hard to support your family.

In Loving Memory of My Father, Leroy Bennett. Dad this is Angie your youngest daughter, I miss you terribly I can’t ask God for more time with you, It would be selfish of me. The Lord blessed you with 87 wonderful years but the time here spent was not long enough. I love you, and miss you terribly, and my life will not be the same without my Dear Father who I loved so much. My father, mentor and best friend. I love you with all my heart. I must say job well done good and very faithful servant, and I know Our Heavenly Father has welcomed you home with open arms. Rest in Peace Daddy. Angie Smith,-love you, miss you. In remembrance of my loving Father on his one year Anniversary of his passing. You are very much missed Dear Father. Life is not the same I miss your laugh, speaking with you, and most of all your kindness you displayed to everyone along with your good heart.
