Born Lula Mae Stewart, on January 11, 1931, to loving parents, Luther H. Stewart and Katie L. Stewart in Columbus, Ohio. She resided on the east side of Columbus with her parents and siblings. Lula Mae departed this life at the age of 88, on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, surrounded by family at Mt. Carmel East Hospital.

Lula attended Felton Elementary School, Pilgrim, Champion Jr. High School, and Central High School. She graduated and received her degree as a Cosmetologist at the Poro School of Cosmetology in Columbus, Ohio in the 1950’s.

Lula Mae worked as a professional cosmetologist and entrepreneur in the beauty industry styling many heads for over 40 years. She opened her first salon in the 1960’s named Lula’s Beauty Shop on East Long Street. You may also remember her working at Merrill’s Beauty Shop, My Lady’s Beauty Shop, The Original Flair, and Bowman’s Mixed Beauty.

Lula Mae married her first husband, Bernard Jackson, in the 1940’s and had four daughters together: Katherine (Cookie), Isabel (Peaches), Phyllis (Candy), and Bernadette (Pumpkin). After 10 years of marriage, sadly her husband Bernard passed away shortly after the birth of their youngest child.
Lula Mae married her second husband James W. Bowman in 1963. They had one daughter together, Ingrid (Nana). All together they raised 5 beautiful daughters and enjoyed many wonderful years together. Lula Mae was known for her generous hospitality, excellent cooking, her sophisticated sense of style and the classy tailor-made clothing she wore. Lula was also known to host fancy dinner parties for her family and friends. She had a beautiful smile and laugh that would light up a room.

Lula Mae gave her life to Christ at an early age. She became a member of Trinity Baptist Church in 1939. Later in life she joined Lost and Found Ministries which was an inner-city youth ministry. She was very active in starting various groups; Family Sense of Pride, Unity Day Picnic, Let the Thunder Roar Christian Social, Fishers of Men Fish Fry, God’s Army youth Choir and many more.

Lula Mae is preceded in death by her parents, Luther H. and Katie L Stewart; Grandparents, Clara and Alexander Person and great grandparents, Robert and Virginia Person. Her husband, James W. Bowman; daughter, Katherine Williams; son-in-law, Timothy Williams, son-in-law, Darryl Dunson; brothers, Robert Stewart, John Stewart, Luther Stewart Jr. and sister, Ann L. Stewart.

Dunson; Great Grandchildren, Darriel Hawkins, Willie Malcolm Carter, Dawan Jackson Jr., Timela Crutcher, Alexandrea Crutcher, Elijah Jackson, Aaron Carter, Ivana Woods-Murphy, Alessa Carter, Ahtiona Carter, Maya Carter, Myles Carter, Mamie Sylva, Marieme Sylva, Foday Camara, Sally Camara, Dante Jackson, Omar Carter-Sylva, Zakariyah Carter-Sylva, King Bates, I’maya Niang-Dunson, Isaiah Dunson, Fatou Sylva, Levi Jackson, Christian Hansford, Ryan Jackson, Jacarie Dunson, Jacobie Dunson; Great-Great Grandchildren, Royce Hawkins and Marcus Jr. (MJ) Burton.

Visitation 2:00pm and Funeral Service 3:00pm Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Trinity Baptist Church, 461 St Clair Ave.

Interment 10:00am Tuesday at Union Cemetery.
