I’ll be completely unknown to members of Marcus’s family. But I’d like to offer a few observations based on my contacts with Marcus more than 35 years ago — at Riverside Methodist Hospital, where Marcus worked on Laundry Services and I was an Administrative Resident and, later, the Vice President for Mental Health and Alcoholism Services.

I first met Marcus when I was doing “administrative rounds” as a resident, to become familiar with the Hospital’s various departments. I stood out — and from that point on we were always very friendly with one another whenever our paths would cross. I though Marcus was a very unusual person: whipsmart, always smiling, always remembering people’s names, just a good, fun guy to be around. He was one of my favorite people at the Hospital.

From that point on, he always remembered me, always had something personal to say to me whenever we encountered one another, and always seemed like he was smiling, even though his work-related responsibilities probably would have seemed repetitive and “menial” to many people. I admired him and just liked him as a person.

I met my future wife when I was working at the hospital (later, I left the field of hospital administration and went on to do my Ph.D. in psychology at Ohio State). Even after I no longer worked at Riverside, I would occasionally say to Betsy, “I wonder whatever happened to Marcus Mathis.” He left that kind of impression on me. I never learned anything at all about his background or his personal life. But I was struck by his savant-like intelligence. As far as I could tell, he never forgot anything: people’s names, anything I said to him about anything, etc. And he was just A NICE GUY. You remember those — and I never forgot Marcus.

I extend my deepest sympathies to members of Marcus’s family. I was saddened to read of his death in this morning’s paper. A very memorable man. I wish I knew more about him.

Sending out prayers and condolences to the Mathis Family from the McQueen Family. Used to hang out with Marcus, Kenny and Darryl all the time when we were in high school. They were my big brothers. Always had everyone laughing. I’m sure he has everyone laughing up in heaven. RIP Marcus til we meet again.

Condolence from RB on July 7th, 2018 2:20 pm

My condolences for the death of your dearly loved Mr. Mathis.   The Creator also feels the loss (Ezekiel 18:32).  But He has wonderful plans for his future.  Acts 24:18 and Job 33:25 promise him return to life perfectly healthy.  Psalm 37:11, 29 and Revelation 21:3-5 give him the hope of life everlasting in enjoyable surroundings.  Jesus himself taught us to pray for that marvelous time at Matthew 6:9-10.  He Who promises cannot lie (Isaiah 55:10-11; Titus 1:2).  JW.ORG will direct you to more related verses so your hope in that bright future may remain strong.  May the peace of God be with all of you (Philippians 4:6-7).

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Marcus’ passing. I am sorry that I’m just getting the news. It will always be in my prayers that you have peace in your hearts and strength in your souls in the face of the incredible losses you have endured. I would also like to thank you for welcoming me into your lives when I was growing up. The time I spent at your home was instrumental in helping me get through what I still see as the hardest part of life in ways I can’t put into words. Please feel free to contact me anytime. I’m in the Atlanta metro area often.
