Margaret Marie Young, also known as Momma by her daughter Cheree, Margaritte by her daughter Torrie, Mom by her son Alonzo (Lumpy/Zochi) , Mema by her 9 grand and 8 great-grandchildren and Aunt Margaret by nieces and nephews. She is well known as Dr. Mom/Grandma by everyone who has had an ailment. She knew that there is more than one purpose for everything in this world. Grapes can reduce a cyst. Garlic around the neck not only stops vampires but also cures mumps, high blood pressure and reduces the threat of heart attacks. She prescribed burnt toast water for upset stomach or diarrhea while having her own secret formula for diaper rash. She gave all prescriptions with love. If they did not work, she always had something else up her sleeve like apple cider vinegar and brown paper to wrap around your sprain. Don’t forget to get those extra mustard packages when you go to your favorite fast food restaurant for cramps. So, if you’re about to throw away an old pair of pair of stockings, STOP. Consider: There may be another use.

Born in St. Louis, MO May 28 1930, She married and moved to Detroit, Michigan where she loved to dance. She had three beautiful children. She divorced and went on to raise her children, while being a pre-school teacher for ten years as well as other odd jobs to supplement her income. Her favorite fun time was being the talking Easter Egg for Hudson department store. To the children she was like Santa Clause. The children and store loved her as she made the children laugh and the parents spend money. Margaret loved children and spent a large part of her life teaching, spoiling and raising her grand and great-grandchildren coupled with many others. She was affectionate yet stern, demanding respect and discipline. There was no crying baby that could resist her warm arms and soft hands.

She was always prepared to walk through the storm, through the night. She ensured that she had enough water, food, flashlights and snacks for her and her family and the neighbors.
Margaret acquired her wings to join her beloved father, mother and siblings as she went into eternal life peacefully on Tuesday, October 15, with her four black handsome angels who came to visit her twice in the hospital. Her loving spirit of giving, forgiving and believing is carried on by those family members and friends she touched by listening and encouraging them to follow their dreams and do better. Margaret was very smart and fond of reading all types of books and magazines. She would write and draw to past the time. She was a very good artist who loved to draw angles.

Many were blessed to have received loving gifts and talents from Margaret such as the talent of poetry, song, dance and patience. She made beautiful flower arrangements for weddings, graduations and other events. She made beautiful red, white and pink rose corsages out of crepe paper for Mother’s day long before Martha Stewart. We sold corsages for $1.25 and the boutonnière for $0.75 because they were single flowers and did not have as elaborate bows that she tied beautifully on the corsages. They were carefully wrapped in sandwich or quart size bags. We always sold out. We sold them before church rain or shine on Mother’s Day. As a seamstress, she tried to give us the gift of sewing by making beautiful costumes, dresses and skate dresses without a pattern or model. But we did not absorb that talent. Some things are better left to the professionals.

Mom is predeceased by her parents John and Willie Frank Houston and eight siblings: Jim, Lillian, Ella Rose, Victoria, Stella Ruth, Walter, William and Alma.

She is survived by her 3 children: Son Alonzo (Zochi/Lumpy) Young, Cheree Warren (husband Keith Warren) and Torrie Pennington (husband Tony Pennington) Grandchildren: Memnoff (Memmy) Young, Shauna Moore-loved like a granddaughter; Keith (wife Tiffane) and Tresi Warren, Shamire White, Takeshi and Aisha Young, Makeda Young, Taryn, Toni and Tia Pennington.
