Marilyn Alexander

Our beloved mother Marilyn Paulene Alexander “Nan Nan” was born on March 30, 1937 in Washington Court House, Ohio to the late Irene Lowe McCarty. She was called home to be with the lord on July 11, 2022, at the age of 85. She was one of the strongest women to ever walk this earth and we were truly blessed to have her as the matriarch of our family.

Marilyn always put her family first. She was a dedicated mother to four beautiful daughters (Ann, Judy, Denise, and Valerie), whom she adored.

Marilyn was a dedicated, kind, loving, and supportive mother. Her knowledge and guidance were the foundation of her family. Affectionately given the nickname “Nan Nan,” she devoted her time and energy as a caregiver to her loved ones. She lovingly cared for anyone who needed a place to stay and would hold family dinners every Sunday after church. She was known for her famous macaroni and cheese.

Marilyn loved cooking. She retired from 40 years as the head cook at Pauline’s Home for the Aged. Her passion allowed her to start a garden in the back of her yard, where she would generously feed her family and the community.

After retirement, Marilyn worked part-time as a secretary for the Columbus Urban League. She was an avid animal lover. She ALWAYS had a dog. In her pastime, she enjoyed dog races, garage sales, getting her hair done and nails painted red. Last but not least, she absolutely loved playing and yelling “BINGO!”

Marilyn was preceded in death by her mother, Irene Lowe McCarty; step-father, Luther George McCarty; daughter, Valerie Copas; honorary sons, Peewee Anderson and Alvin McCarty; and sister, Carol Pierce.

Marilyn is survived by her daughters, Ann Copas, Judy Allen, and Denise Copas; step- daughters, Deborah (Rick) Huntly and Cheryl Woods, niece, Veronica McCarty; grandsons, Edward D. Meredith Jr., Larry A. Carey, James Copas Sr. (Chasity), Andrew Lipscomb, and David Silver; granddaughters, Lanece Copas and Brandi Lynch Copas; great-grandchildren, who she loved dearly, Iyanna Meredith, James Copas Jr., Taylor Copas, Nevaeh Feggins, Tiyonna Carey, Elijah Meredith, Aubrie Copas, Ella Meredith, Le’Ann Carey, and Maxamillion Harrison; best friend, “BINGO!”; and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Marilyn’s legacy is left through her unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and community. Her memory is cherished by all who knew her. She now takes rest from her earthly labor to receive her heavenly reward.

Visitation 10:00am and Funeral 11:00am Friday, July 22, 2022 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE NORTH, 2500 Cleveland Ave.
