Mary Elizabeth Mizelle

MizelleMary

Mary Elizabeth Mizelle, age 99, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 13th in the comfort of her own home with family. She was born December 22, 1919 in Charleston, West Virgina to Thomas Redd and Earcel Scott. November 10th, 1940, she married her one and only love, Melvin Mizelle, who preceded her in death on May 29th, 1998.

Mary, known as Mae to many and Gibbie to her family, loved people. She was compassionate and giving to everyone. She believed that there was good in all people, young or old and stood up for those she felt could not stand up for themselves. Most importantly, she loved her family fiercely and passionately and never hesitated to talk about, brag about, or show pictures to whomever would listen. She was a lover of music, and the arts, and was undoubtedly one of the best cooks this world has ever seen. She loved antiques, and enjoyed shopping, traveling and just talking to people.

Mary worked 36 years at the Columbus School for Girls in their Kitchen and was their head cook for many, many years. She devoted her days to keeping 600 girls and nearly 100 faculty and staff fed and was always happy to see her granddaughter Holly who attended.

As demonstrated by her favorite Bible verse (Psalm 23)“…surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”, her life was governed by faith and service to the Lord. She was a loyal, working member of St Philip Luthran Church for over 67 years. She sang in the choir and served on many committees over the years.

Mary is survived by her sister Staralee Robbins; two daughters, Adreanne J. Walker, Joanne (Michael) Jennings, one son, Spencer (Elaine) Mizelle: five grandchildren Brent, Renee (William), Craig (Amber) Jeannine (Mike), and Holly (Derrick); ten great grandchildren; Clifford, Chantel, Cree, Aramis, Brandon, Raquel, Adrianna, Dominic, Hannah, and Zane; four great great grandchildren; Carma, Amya, Iyana, Indya. All of these she loved and touched deeply.

Visitation 11:00am and Funeral 12:00pm Friday, January 25, 2019 at St. Philip Lutheran Church 1506 E. Long St., 43203.

Interment Glen Rest Memorial Estate.

To the Mizelle family. My heart is with you and your family at this time of your loss. There is comfort in knowing God’s promises about the resurrection hope. (Acts 24:15) and (John 5:28,29) In the past God has resurrected humans and He is eager to do it again because He hates death. (Mark 5:41-43) To learn more about God’s promises go to JW.ORG. There are online Bible study lessons featured and more. Love Your Neighbor Irish J. Richardson.

  5. I first knew Ms. May when I began school in 1967 at CSG, she was at the school as long as I was, (I graduated in 1979) and she made a lasting impression on me. When I look back, I realize what a wonderful role model she was for young women–she was always neatly dressed–uncluttered and trim, beautiful I thought, (great posture and carriage), very professional with an air of authority and confidence. These impressions of mine began when I was a 6 year old little girl and my memory of her as a strong, capable, efficient, organized, kind and caring woman has stayed with me. We are fortunate to have had 99 years of her positive influence especially during a time when it is so sorely needed.

  6. I’m sending my sincere condolences to the Mizelle family and friends. This is one of life’s greatest challenges that we have to face. Jesus said, did, and promised something that gives us comfort and hope. In the Bible at John 11:11-14, Jesus likened death to sleep. This comfort us in two ways: 1) we are assured by those words that our loved ones are not suffering or in pain. 2) If a person is just sleeping, he will wake up! Notice what Jesus does next at John 11:43-44, this is amazing! If you would like to know more details about this, please download a free copy of the brochure Good News from God @ Jw.org and read lesson 6 along with the Bible.

  7. Condolences to Adrian and Joan, May God’s love make your grief bearable. You’re in my thoughts and prayers. I’ll always remember your Mom when I first came to visit St. Philip she made me feel at ease and comfortable. I always looked to sit with her and enjoyed our talks.

Some of the best memories my sister and I have from CSG involve Mrs. Mizelle and the rest of the kitchen staff. We often felt lonely and kind of like we didn’t fit in, so sometimes on breaks we’d head into the kitchen. My sister would belt out “Hello, cooks!” and Mrs. Mizelle and the rest of the kitchen staff would all hug us. God truly blessed everyone with Mrs. Mizelle. My sincere condolences to Holly and the rest of the Mizelle family.

  9. I send loving thoughts to the family of Mrs. Mizelle. I am sorry that I missed her celebration of life. I just found the notice today. She and my mother, Elizabeth Clark were such good friends on earth and now they are together again. Mrs. Mizelle was such a sweet caring person and she will forever be in my heart.
