SmithMattie

Mattie Lou Smith was born on March 25, 1934, to Lullean Hewitt and Izell Bergman in Valdosta, Georgia.
When Mattie was 8 years old, she and her mother moved to Inkster, Michigan where she was raised and resided for over 20 years. Mattie attended Inkster Public Schools and was a graduate of Inkster High School. She met and married Morris W. “Smitty” Smith, and they relocated to Columbus, Ohio and started their family.

Mattie continued her education in Ohio at Columbus State University. She graduated with an Associates Degree in Social Services. She held Social Worker positions at Rosemont School for Girls, Franklin County Children Services, and the State of Ohio Department of Youth Services, where she retired with 26 years of service.

Mattie was a dedicated, loving Christian. She was a longtime member of Shiloh Baptist Church, and later transferred to Faith Ministries Church with Rev. C. Dexter Wise III. She was an active, dedicated member until her health prevented her from doing so.

Mattie was an active member of the Faith Seniors Ministry, Faith Force, and the Bereavement Committee. In addition, she was active in her community, and was a Guardian/Ward for persons of the State who had no living family members. Mattie enjoyed her life, her work, family and friends.

On July 16, 2020, Mattie went home to be with her Lord and Savior. Preceded in death by her parents, Lullean Hewitt and Izell Berman; husband, Morris W. Smith; and family sister, Mary Lee Burke of Detroit, Michigan.

Mattie leaves to cherish her memory, brother, Izell Bergman (Valdosta Georgia); daughters, Sheila (Lawrence) Stevens and Monica Smith; son/grandson Antonio (Jasmine) Smith; granddaughters, Shalon Stevens, Sinay (Dimitris) Simba-Kai, and Alonna Lyons; grandsons, Mason Stevens and Amon Smith; great grandchildren, KaLeah Lyons, Zayla and Zen Smith, and a new great grandchild on the way, due September 8, 2020; and a host of other relatives and family friends who loved Mattie dearly.

To Sheila, Monica, Antonio and the rest of Sister Smith’s family: our hearts are heavy along with yours in the passing of your mother and grandmother. But because Christ is our savior our sadness is mitigated by our joy in knowing that Sister Smith has entered into eternal rest to forevermore be in the presence of Jesus the Christ. Be comforted in your grief by the Word of God “ …but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day” ( II Cor. 4:16) “For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality” (I Cor. 15:53) we love you with the love of Jesus and we are praying for all of you.
