Michael “Chip” Smith II

Michael Keith Smith II was one of three children born to the late Michael Smith and Jacquelyn (Reavling) Willis. Later he came to be the eldest of five siblings total, Kelli, Jeff, Kevin, Lauren and Micah. Chip, as he was known by most, was born on September 17, 1967 in Columbus, Ohio.  God called him home on Monday, August 1, 2022.

Chip is a 1986 graduate of Walnut Ridge High School.  After graduation, Chip joined the Army where he served as a Reservist. He began working for Abbott Foods in July of 1991 which became Sysco and retired in July 2021.

Chip was always an avid lover of sports. He played baseball and soccer when he was very young. He even played football, softball and bowled as a young adult for recreation. He was a true sportsman that no matter the turnout of the game he held high spirits and maintained the spirit of the game. He would always say “It’s not about the win, it’s about having fun”. It is rumored he was once a Steelers fan (in ancient times) but showed nothing but loyalty to the Cleveland Browns. A Dawg through and through.

As a child, Chip spent many summers at his grandparent’s house in the now historic Hanford Village.  It is there that he first laid eyes on the ONE who would become the love of his life.  As a teenage boy, Chip would light up whenever he had a chance to see Jill Porter and her beautiful smile. Don’t get confused, Jill had the same sparkle in her eyes for Chip.  On July 17, 2000, Chip finally convinced Jill to become his wife.  Together the two shared four beautiful children. Chip loved and adored his family.  When Chip became a grandfather or “Paw Paw”, as he was affectionately known, he was so happy.  His first grandson, Xayvion quickly became Chip’s sidekick.

This was only the beginning of a lineage of sidekicks. Eventually Chip and Jill had a house of 10 grandchildren. He was on top of the world whenever his grandbabies were near. Pawpaw’s house was the place to be, No was rarely heard, snacks were in abundance and video games were always in rotation. He had a unique relationship with each and everyone of them and gave them all a special nickname.

His love was not limited to his wife, kids and grandkids but he loved all of his family and in many cases was the gorilla glue keeping everyone together. He maintained a reputation as the life of the party and could put a smile on your face that hurt. He was extremely generous and would give you the shirt off his back or the last penny in his pocket if you needed it. He was hardworking, hard-loving, a role model and inspiration to men old and young, at work and at home.

Chip is preceded in death by his grandparents Mildred Cartwright, Mary Ella and St. Elmo Smith; his father Michael Smith and step-father Joseph Willis.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Jill Smith; his mother Jacquelyn Willis, stepmother Pamela Smith and sister-in-law Joy Cross.  Also left to mourn his loss are his siblings Kelli (Kenneth) Keeley, Jeffrey (Marsha), Kevin, Lauren and Micah Smith; his children Myicha (Derek) Rendleman, Kiara Starks, Marquis (Arria) and Mershawn Smith. Chip also leaves his grandchildren Xayvion, Robert, Nyla, Monty, Dylan, Zyreon, Aizariah, Kimari, Malachi and Shania.  Along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends that mourn his passing.
