Minister Winifred “Winnie” Jackson

One October day, a jewel was sent from Heaven in the form of a beautiful baby girl. She was named Winifred, after her mother, and given the favorite middle name of her parents, Donette. One cloudy morning in May, God called this jewel back to himself, as her journey, her mission was complete.
Winifred Donette Jackson, affectionately called Donette or “Dicey”, by her family and called Winnie by her friends and coworkers was born October 19, 1947, and departed May 15, 2020. She was the third child of Henry H. and Winifred D. Mitchell, born in Urbancrest, Ohio. Donette attended Columbus Public Schools. Upon graduation, Winnie began her career working for the Federal Government at the “Depot”, now known as the Defense Supply Center. Next, Winnie continued her work career with IBM, starting as a receptionist, and continuing with educational opportunities until she was chosen as an instructor for the Columbus Urban League/IBM Training Center. At the closing of IBM, Winnie began her career with State Teachers Retirement Systems (STRS Ohio), where she retired in 2012.
It was during her time with STRS Ohio, that Winnie realized there must be more to life. On April 1, 2001, she heard the Call of God, repented of her sins, was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost. From that time on, Sister Jackson has never turned back. She united with the Bethel Apostolic Church of Christ. I can’t begin to tell you all the positions she filled in the house of Praise and in the Milo-Grogan community.
Winnie is preceded in death by her parents, Henry H. and Winifred D. Mitchell, Sr.; her sister, Rose Ann; and her brother, Henry Jr.
Winnie will be sorely missed by her children, Brian (Lori Czigans) Mitchell, Joan Mitchell, and Lela Jackson; her beloved grandchildren, Antjuan and LaTonia Mitchell, Brian Mitchell-Jackson, Ivan Jr. and Trinity Brown; the apples of her eye, the great grandchildren, Julius Peoples II, Glen III, Mya, Paris and King Hicks; her baby sister, Serena (Christopher) Henderson; her nieces, Ghia and Micayla Henderson and Amari-Shakur Anderson; her sister in love, Gail Mitchell; her Georgia peaches, NeCia, Henry III & Richard Mitchell; her aunts, Betty Mitchell, Gwendolyn Ellis and Theresa Wilkes; and a multitude of family, friends, and the Bethel Apostolic Church family.
Private services Visitation 10:00 AM and Funeral Service 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE EAST, 5456 E. Livingston Ave.
A mask is mandatory.
Interment at Green Lawn Cemetery.

Winnie was such a kind person who would cheer others up just by seeing her. She always had a smile for others and something positive to say. I worked with her for many years. My deepest sympathies to her family. She was a lovely woman who shared her faith everyday just by showing up.
I am so very sorry to learn my dear friend has passed. One thing for sure the gates were packed waiting on her arrival. I cannot thank God enough for bringing Winnie into my life, my mother/sisterfriend. I have wonderful memories that I will cheish long as I live. She truly loved our father & know she is safe in his arms. Praying for you all & sending hugs & love.Forever in my heart
Winnie was not only a co-worker, friend, and great listener—she was family. Meeting her 25 years ago was one of the reasons I loved my work. She will be truly missed. Winnie and her laugh, knitted gifts, prayers and motherly advice will forever be close to my heart. I will miss our “birthday” and “holiday” lunches. God received his #1 angel on 5/15….
The world is going to miss Ms. Jackson for sure. A deeply felt loss not only with the family but for anyone that had the pleasure to have met her. May the family of MS. Winnie stay strong , prayed up and most of all stay blessed because she had you all prayed in advance. God Bless.

My deepest sympathy to all of Winnie’s family. She was a beautiful person and I will miss her friendship. Winnie taught me a lot over the years that I will carry with me forever. Her laughter, kindness and faith set the example for others to follow.
Though words cannot truly express the sense of loss, may your sorrow soon be replaced with fond memories of happier times, and may God watch over Winnie and her family.
Winnie was a customer at Kroger, which was my first job. Shas was always so sweet to me and treated me like family. I have thought of her often over the past 20+ years. She will be missed.
Our friendship started so long ago 45 years at IBM. We were family I loved your family and they loved me. Brian,Joan and Lela my heart goes out to you. Serena your sister loved you. I’m praying that God give all of you peace And comfort. My sincere sympathy
I am so sorry to hear of Winnie’s passing. She was my supervisor at STRS. Not only was she a great leader , but she was a great friend. She always had a smile and a kind word if you were feeling down.
I pray that God will give you all comfort and peace during this time. Most of all keep her memories close.

I was so sorry to hear of Winnie passing away. She was a very good friend of mine. We worked together at IBM. She was such a nice sweet person and always had that nice smile. To Brian Joan and Lela you probably don’t remember me because I haven’t seen you since you were little kids but I want to offer my condolences to you and to Serena and the rest of the family. I will keep you all in my prayers. To Winnie I will miss you my good friend. Rest in Peace.
My cousin. I will miss us singing in the PSO choir and in our church, we traveled to all the church meetings together. I will miss her peach cobbler. She also made a blanket and two hats for my grand baby. I really loved her. Serena you and your family are in my prayers. I love you.❤️❤️❤️❤️

Winnie was a member of the Executive Board for Neighborhood Services, Inc. (NSI). Her energy and enthusiasm for the work of NSI will be greatly missed. She was an inspiration to those of us who served with her on the Board. My sincere condolences to her family.
We will miss Winnie terribly at Neighborhood Services. It was always wonderful to see her smiling face and wonderful sense of humor. Everyone was uplifted by her presence. My condolences to the family. We are all better people for having her in our lives
When I think of Winnie, I see her beautiful, huge, contagious smile and kind eyes. I worked with Winnie at STRS Ohio and we shared stories of our families – my daughters were in the childcare there at that time and she loved seeing all the children and opened her heart to all of them. She was always pleasant and friendly and took pride in her work. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
I met Winnie because we were both on the board of Neighborhood Services food pantry. She was positive, creative and generous and a very much a joy to be around. She will be very much missed.
I will remember Winnies Smile and genuine kindness to all people. She will be missed beyond measure and I am blessed because I knew her. I worked with Winnie at STRS and her love for others and God was shown and not just spoken. The family is in my prayers.

I will miss working with Winnie at the Food Pantry where she served on the board. Winnie was always smiling and she brought joy to every board meeting. I want to express my sincere condolences to the family.

It is so crazy, but I miss you more now than ever before. I miss our calls to each other to just rant about “things and just to check in. So much has happened in the world since you left. I’m glad you didn’t have to witness this craziness! I was just thinking about some of the stuff we did. Watching the award shows will NEVER be the same. Remember how we would call and rate every performance??? I am trying to be follow your last instructions to me….I love you too and I will figure out what you want me to do. I love you. Kiss Mommy, Daddy, RoseAnn and Junnie for me.
I will miss you forever, Mom. You were my biggest cheerleader and role model. You gave me the confidence to know that I could achieve anything with the help of the Lord. When I heard you say that you were proud of me (for getting my own place in my own name and believing that God would help me achieve this despite my background) I was humbled.
She prepared me for her homegoing…but I was not ready to lose my best friend and confidante. I feel like due to lack of knowledge about covid, that the test administered to determine if my mom had contracted covid was defective and gave her the disease. She definitely didn’t have it before she was admitted. But I know that she is going to heaven…she’s Jesus’s secretary.
I love you and miss you terribly.
