Hattie Mae Parrish was born in Williamson, West Virginia on November 25, 1936 to Joe & and Annie Mae Parrish. As a child she attended the School for the Deaf & Blind, where she excelled in music and crafts. She often explained that she did not know that she was blind until she was 10 years old, because her parents did not cottle her, or treat her in any special way.

Along with her parents and baby girl Deborah Lynn, she moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1957. In 1961, with 2 children and expecting another, she was in search of a church home, when a neighbor by the name of Willa Mae Tate invited her to visit Christ Memorial Baptist Church, where she joined and remained for 60 years. As a member of Christ Memorial Hattie served as a faithful member in many groups, including the Sanctuary Choir, The Golden Circle, Ruth Circle and the Mother Board. She was sometimes asked to play the piano during devotion if the musician was running late.

For 40 years Mother Parrish was a dedicated employee of the Vision Center Industries of Central Ohio, a warehouse that mainly employed individuals with physical or mental disabilities. As an assembler, Mother Parrish would piece together automobile parts for such companies as Volkswagen, Ford and Mercedes Benz. After becoming a warehouse manager, Mother Parrish would become the receptionist and office manager until her retirement in 2005.

On June 11, 2021, The Lord made the call for Mother Parrish to join Him in her eternal home. She is preceded in death by parents, Joe and Annie Parrish, Daughters: Saundra Parrish, Cynthia Patterson, and Deborah Cole, granddaughters, Martina Brown and great grandchild Curtionna Harrison. She leaves to cherish her memory, son: Garry “Murdoc” Parrish, grandsons Joseph Parrish, Damone (Teddra) Parrish, granddaughter Diamond (Reginald) Zimmerman, ShaLaunda Parrish, Kourtney Cole, special friends Maxine Raymore, Harry & Marlene Reed, Sharon Allen and a host of family, friends and loved ones.

Condolence from Pam Perry on June 21st, 2021 8:25 pm

My husband (Jim)was Assistant Manager at Vision Center when it was on Cleveland Ave. I (Pam)was secretary. Jim and I got married while we worked there. Hattie gave us the names Jimmy and Pammy. It stuck with us until he died in 2001. I actually have those nicknames on our headstone under our real names. I will never forget Hattie being a part of our lives. She was a hard worker, loving, caring and a lot of fun to be around. She was a very special lady. She will be missed. My condolences go out to her family.

To the Parrish Family, I am deeply saddened to here of the passing of Ms Parrish. As well, the passing of her daughters Deborah and Cynthia were shocking also. I played with the Parrish girls when they lived on East 18th Avenue. What was always amazing to me was to watch Miss Parrish keep her house so spotless. Moreover, when I saw her with bucket and cloth wiping down her children’s toys I was amazed. Blessings to all of you!
