A LIFE CELEBRATED

On Friday, January 16, 1925, in Madison, West Virginia, NORA ELIZABETH PRICE COLES was born, the baby girl of seven children, to Howard and Eva Smoot Price (Granddaughter of Joseph and Nora Smoot). Little was it known that this baby girl, after enduring many illnesses, trials and tribulations would develop into a precious and priceless jewel. Nora was a rare commodity. She withered the storms of life for 95 years and sat proudly as the “backbone” of a family who was honored and proud to have her as a “Mother”.

After suffering the loss of her mother at an early age, Nora moved to Burlington, Ohio, to live with her Aunt Agnes; and there she obtained her education through the public-school system. She later moved to Beards Fork, West Virginia to live with her oldest sister, Cordelia. While in Beards Fork, Nora met the love of her life, James (Topsy) Coles; and on June 25, 1945, she and Topsy were married; and they became the proud parents of five beautiful children, Russell, Quetta, Tee, Motto and Deb.

Nora joined the Emmanuel Tabernacle Holiness Church in Beards Fork, where was a faithful and active member until she relocated to Columbus, Ohio, in August, 1995, after the passing of her husband.

She was also President of the Busy Bee Club where she organized numerous community vacation trips for the youth. To help defray the costs, she along with others sold hot dogs, fish sandwiches, pizza rolls and candy almost every Saturday to ensure that every child in the community was able to go without costs to their families. As President of the Busy Bees, she and her team of volunteers were also instrumental in obtaining funding for a community playground. Although Nora later resided in Columbus, Ohio, she continued to serve with honor as “Mother” to a host of family and friends in Beards Fork and surrounding communities.

In 1995, Nora united with the Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies under the leadership of Dr. Sherman S. Watkins; where she served on the Mother’s Board.

Nora endured many life- threatening illnesses, but the Lord always spared her life and brought her out victoriously so that she could continue to help and inspire others. No matter how tough times were, Nora taught her children to love one another and to not argue or fight among themselves. She would often say, “How can you get along with others when you are not able to get along with each other?”

Nora was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Eva Smoot Price, husband of 50 years, James “Topsy” Coles, son, Russell Price; grandson, Gregory Austin, sisters, Cordelia Oden, Naomi Smoot, Ada Price, brothers, Carl Price and Marvin Price

Nora was a precious jewel; loved by so many. She leaves to carry on her legacy and cherish her memory: children, Marquetta (Joe) DeVaux, Conway, South Carolina, Wilma “Tee” Watkins, James (Brenda) Coles, Deborah Coles, all of Columbus, Ohio; brother, Ronald Smoot, Cross Lanes, West Virginia, sisters-in law, Naomi Carpenter, Scottsdale, Arizona, Rinda Price, Madison, West Virginia; brothers-in-law, Theopolus Coles, Scottsdale, Arizona, Carol Taylor, Columbus, Ohio; 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great grandchildren; special children, Roosevelt (Lonnie) Pitt, Joe Moorehead, Lillie Kimbro, Ruby Price, Stephanie Burrow, Charlene Newkirk, Stan and Delois Whitmore, Danielle Washington, Donothan Washington, Barbara Stepney and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Fallen Limb
A limb has fallen from our family tree. We keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song, the good life I lived, while I was strong.

Continue my heritage. I’m counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease. My soul is at rest. Remembering all, how I truly was blessed.

Continue traditions, no matter how small. Go on with your life, don’t worry about falls. I miss you all dearly; so, keep up your chin. Until the day comes, when we’re together again.”

Public Viewing from 9:00am-10:00am, followed by a Private Visitation at 10:00am and Private Home Going Service at 11:00am Saturday, December 5, 2020 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE EAST, 5456 E. Livingston Ave. (one block east of Noe Bixby, turn North on Lonsdale Rd.). Mask and Social Distancing are required. Interment Monday at Meadow Haven Cemetery in West Virginia.
