Mother Ruth E. Qualls, age 97. Sunrise October 2, 1923, and Sunset August 3, 2021. She was the first born of six children to the marriage union of William Hunter and Mattie (Gates) Hunter. She was born and raised in Columbus, Oh.

On October 11, 1940. Ruth Elizabeth Gates married James Edward Qualls Sr. James and Ruth spend years building a marriage of 59 years of love, respect and six wonderful children: James, Delores, Danny, Steve, Charlotte, and Sharon.

We were a traveling family; our first trip was to NYC. We enjoyed picnics and we had our own boat. Sunday was our picnic and boat riding day until daddy got saved. We still went on trips but most Sundays were home so we could go to church first.

We traveled all over the country my dad either built a motor home to travel in or purchase one. Wherever mom when she left her beautiful smile, and the love of God in different places, yet God was always ahead to take us to our destination.

Mom was a woman whom we all know loved the Lord and did not meet any strangers. She was a virtuous woman in every sense of the word; raising children, loved cooking and baking, making clothes, repairing clothes, working, helping us with schoolwork, a member of PTA, she played marbles, road our bikes, and took us to different lessons.

She did fun stuff with my brothers and walked them all over the place in the heat. She gave spankings coupled with lots of love.

Her heart was so big, mom would venture out to meet strangers who were in need (I would say mom you can’t trust everybody) … She paid me no mind.

She said things like “we eat too much; Jesus wasn’t always eating he was about his father’s business.” Our “Ganny Sue Berry” loved all her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great- great grandchildren. She always said God was her sweetheart.

She worked as an Educational Assistants. She joined Gospel Tabernacle UHC, where she helped cooked in the daycare. She was appointed a Deaconess; help teach Sunday School. She went on all the tips, helped, prayed, and became the church track team Praise! Mother’s Day this year Bishop made her the church Mother, she said “What am I to do?”

She is preceded in death by her parents William and Mattie Hunter, her husband James Qualls, son-in-law Marquis Holland Sr., Daughter, Sharon, Brothers Lewis, Jr. Hunter, Sister Bertha Grandson Marquis Holland, Grandson Michael, Great granddaughter Stephanie Dannielle, Grandson Damien, Daughter in-law Flossie, and Niece Terry.

Left to share and remember her awesome life: Her Sister Margie Jackson; Sister-in-law and friend Louise Hunter; daughter in-laws (always daughters) Judy Qualls, Kristina Wolf, Ruth Qualls; Children: James, Delores, Danny, Steve, Charlotte and Sharon; Grandchildren: James E. Qualls, III, Bradley E. Qualls, Christopher A., David M., Pamela L., Jonathan, Jeremiah, Kathryn, Stephanie, Margie, Mark, Roman, Anthony, Michelle, Shannon, Nina, and Danny; Great Grandchildren: Tyler, Hailey, Bradley, Michael, Joshua, Isaiah, Elliot, Elijah, Ceiera, David Jr., Aaron, Anthony, Connor, Isaiah, Taylor, TJ, Layla, Angelica, Marquis, Montel, Makayla, Roman II, Khalil, Stacey, Marcelles, Micah; Great-Great Grandchildren: Xade, Xavier, Mark, Macey, Vincent, Ariyah, Trinity, Dream, Josiah, Mireya, Blake, and Grant. She had many nieces; Shirley was like her daughter. Many nephews: Sheeter was a son to her. Bobby a nephew and friend. A host of many, many great, and great-great nieces, and nephews.

Condolence from Bradley Qualls on August 9th, 2021 9:24 pm

Grandma was such a shining example of love and generosity. To give yourself away as she did, is how to love God through loving his people. Truly a life well lived!

Condolence from Maureen on August 10th, 2021 8:31 am

I learned that my dear friend Ruthy died the same day that my first grandchild was born. I’m sad that Ruthy, who prayed for her health and safety, will never see her, but maybe they met in passing.

We were neighbors, and even after she moved, we visited when her MANY corporal works of mercy allowed her the time, and she was always such a blessing. The world will be poorer without her in it

Ruthy, you never got to stay in my guest room, but I’m positive that your Father in heaven had a truly magnificent mansion prepared for you❣️

“I love you, honey!”

Condolence from Mary and Janet Willis on August 10th, 2021 10:21 am

Jan and I loved Ruth, we met her at computer class. Ruth was an inspiration to us in how to live your life with no other thought but to serve God and help others. I will miss her special prayers that she was always willing to give. It is now our turn to give back to her what she always gave to us.

Channel 4 created a wonderful profile of Ruthy this past December:

She fussed that it was too much, but we are sooo grateful to have this.

Condolence from Carol Walton on August 10th, 2021 3:46 pm

I met Miss Ruth walking the neighborhood. At first it was a nod as we passed. They we started chatting and exchanged names. We became friends. She would call me and pray for me and my husband. I come to love her and looked forward to the days our paths crossed. She shared her apple bread with me. She had just said she was going to make zucchini bread for our mail carrier and me. She was so active and such an amazing woman. She is my hero!! I miss her already. I know she lived to be with Jesus and now she is resting in His arms.

To her family, my prayers are with you.

To Qualls Family,

Our deepest condolences. My memories go back over 60 years when Delores and I would go home after church and have a fabulous dinner with the family before going back to church for BTU. Her life was a blessing to us all.

Condolence from Barry and Yvonne Young on August 14th, 2021 12:29 pm

Dear Family, please forgive me for not being there. I love you all so very much!!! I miss my Aunt Ruthie more than you you will ever know. I talked to her a couple Saturdays ago, and I will Truly miss how she would just call out of the blue just to say I love you and God Bless you and your wife. She will forever be in my heart and I will miss her hugs!!!! Love you all.

Condolence from Joseph Jones on August 22nd, 2021 7:20 pm

In the midst of times like this we are often so preoccupied with what we feel we have lost, longing for just one more smile, one more conversation, one more hug, one more chance to say “I love you.” But if we turn our eyes to the bottom line of the balance sheet of life, we will see that when our Creator blesses us with time together we are never in the red, showing a loss, but always in the black ink of profit. Even a very short life changes the lives it encounters. He has not taken away from us forever, but has given to us for a time. The nourishment our hearts receive in that time sustains us eternally. So to you, Jim, Judy and your entire group of family and friends, praise be to the Creator for the gift of the life of your mother and loved one.

Condolence from Darrell Zack Qualls on January 5th, 2022 11:05 pm

Ruth’s Husband and my Father Lawrence Darrell Qualls were first cousins. I hadn’t seen cousin Ruth in many years. But recently with social media, I had a chance to reach out to cousin Charolett and was catching up on family history. So glad to know that cousin Ruth was a believer in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that lets me know I will see her again one day. Prayers and Love for the immediate family.
