Steven Lamont “Stevie” Berry was born on Labor Day, September 2, 1970. His
mom fondly referred to him as her ‘little eskimo” because of his chunky little
body and his huge smile. As he grew older, to his parents’ surprise he loved his
birthday because he was born on a holiday. In reality his mom said that “Stevie”
loved his birthday because he liked to party and have a lot of fun. He had the
whole neighborhood as friends and when he was a child everyone was invited to
his birthday party. Stevie loved sports and played basketball. He graduated from
Linden McKinley High School in 1991 and was a part of the Panther Nation.
“Stevie” went to work at Arc industries at the Vern Riffe Center. Because of his
good work ethic, he was later moved to Rhoads Tower. Stevie was kind to all of
the up-and-coming politicians. He even carried Joyce Beatty’s briefcase every
time he saw her. She remarked that the was the nicest young man. For 27 years
“Stevie” provided commercial cleaning for the company. He was an exemplary
employee with high standards of satisfaction and performance. Stevie received
numerous awards for outstanding presentation, attendance, employee of the
month and other various other recognitions.
Stevie worked hard and Stevie also played harder. He was what you call a sharp
dressed man. Stevie was always in style and matched from head to toe. He was
representing the light skinned brothers and was “clean as a chitlin.” He didn’t
play about his sports gear either. Stevie was an avid rowdy Ohio State Buckeyes
and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. When it was game time, it was game time and he
liked to be right in the middle of the crowd cheering his teams on.
Stevie loved his brother Darrell. They were only two years apart and like frick –
and – frack, they bumped heads every once in a while, but Stevie always admired
his big brother and affectionately called him “Bro.”
Stevie had a wonderful outlook on life. He never let anything stop him from being
the best version of himself and was unapologetically “Stevie” a wonderful brother,
son and friend. Stevie’s mom Naomi was his road dog. She and Darrell sat by his
bedside for four months nourishing him and uplifting his spirit. Stevie was a
member of First Church of God and had a personal relationship with Jesus
Christ. After extended illness, Steven Lamont “Stevie” Berry ran the last mile of
the way, straight into the master arms where he is at peace and can now rest.
He is preceded in death by maternal grandparents William and Mary Grant, step-
father Raymond Stevenson and special aunt Julia Brown and special cousin Ilene
Alverson. He leaves to cherish his memory mother Naomi Stevenson, Brother
Darrell Berry, special friend of the family Lynette, Niece Maya Berry and a host of
relatives and friends.
