BrownPatricia photo

Patricia Ann (Payne) Brown was born on March 16,1954, in Ashtabula Ohio to Willie and Treather “Clark” Payne. She was a five-star woman who gained her angel wings on November 15, 2021, in Cleveland Ohio with family after eight-year journey battling Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in which God allowed her to receive a double lung transplant.

Patricia was a graduate of the Ohio State University receiving her bachelor’s degree. She was an active member of the Delta Sigma Theta Inc Epsilon chapter. Her line sisters were known as the “Electrifying Eleven.” She was also employed by Ohio State Services Association, a three-part legal aid program headquartered in Columbus. OSLSA’s mission is to provide civil legal aid and advocacy to combat unfairness and injustice and to help people rise out of poverty. For 42 years she dedicated herself to that mission and beyond.

Patricia Ann Brown or “Patti” as she was affectionately called by her husband, Darryl, whom she married in August 1987, have shared 34 joyous years together. Their marriage was a testament to their vows, together forever, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health, until only death could part them. Together they gave life to two wonderful daughters, Aisha and Ayana Brown, who carry the legacy of their mother’s grace.

“Mommy Brown” was a woman that people looked for wisdom and sound advice. She was designated the Payne Family matriarch, a role she never asked or wanted but embraced as she held unconditional love for every family member, encouraging, inspiring, and guiding them when and wherever she could. As a woman of exemplar faith, you could not know her and not know her Lord. She was a faithful and active member of the Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church for over 30 years, where she served as an usher in the Gatekeepers Ministry and a nurse in the Nurse’s Ministry. She was also an advisor for the In His Image Mime Ministry and she participated and volunteered in church activities and functions as her spirit lead her.

“Nana” is a name that emerged for Patricia at the birth of her first grandchild, Journee. Spoiling her two grandchildren Journee and Judah, became her favorite pastime along with watching tennis. She had a deep love for the game of tennis and for 15+ years she was parent helper with the Wolf Park Ace With Love tennis program in Columbus.

Patricia’s life would seem too short to all of us; but hers was a life well lived, and because of this and her persistent faith and love for people, death has no victory, sickness does not have the final word. To those of us who were touched by her love and existence, the imprint she leaves on our hearts exceeds the quantity of years that we had to spend with her. The God that called home our Patricia, our Patti, our Mommy Brown, and Nana, has inform us that, “to she who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give her a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except she who receives it.”(Revelation 2:17)

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Diane Payne; a brother, Terry L. Payne; one nephew, Reggie L. Grant; and one niece, Moiya Burnell. She will be greatly missed as she was a great wife, sister, aunt, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by husband; Darryl: daughters; Aisha Turner and Ayana: sisters; Carolyn Clark, Lureather Payne, Lisa Payne, Gloria Payne, Willie Jean Payne: brothers; Willie Payne and Marvin Payne, as well as host of nieces and nephews: a Son in-law; Pastor Jamar Turner: Grandchildren; Journee and Judah Turner: special grandchild; Ava Hinton: “second” mother to Tonawanna Gant special niece/daughter; Mahrya Payne: God daughters; Daleyna Tucker and Mykhaela Anderson: special sons; Halim Genus and Trey Hayes: as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. A great friend to all, including her childhood friend, Renee Castleberry, and her best friend of 45 years, Melinda (daughter’s godfather, LeRoy) Douglas:  Special Friends; Ann Thomas, Brenda Sherrell, Gina Smith, Linda Powell, Candice Anderson, Tamara Nathan and Goldean Gibbs.

Delta Sigma Theta’s Omega Omega Service will begin at 3:30pm; Visitation 4:00pm followed by Home Going Service at 5:00 PM Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church, 858 E. 3rd Ave. Mask and Social Distancing are required. Interment 10:00am Monday at Glen Rest Memorial Estates. Ministry of Comfort entrusted to MARLAN J. My condolences to the Brown and rest of the family. I pray that God grants you peace and understanding during these difficult times. And while I know that there is not much that we can say to make you feel better, one thing is for sure, she is no longer in pain, she is in peace and joy. She is home waiting for the time that she gets to see her family and friends in the Lord again. We will all miss her very much. Keeping all of you in my prayers.

My deepest condolences to Patti’s family. She is very much missed. I had the privilege of working with Patti at Legal Aid for nearly 16 years. She was one of the kindest and most joyful people I have ever known and she helped generations of Ohio Legal Aid attorneys to learn to better advocate for and support the communities we serve.

Condolence from Brenda Sherrell on November 18th, 2021 4:03 pm

I extend my sincere sympathy to you Darryl, Aisha, Ayana and all of your family. This is truly a great loss for those of us who remain but Heaven’s gain. I have missed her so much over the past year, I know that I will continue to do so but I will find comfort in my memories. I know you will do the same. She was not only my supervisor & co-worker but she was a confidant, friend and sister in Christ. She was loved and respected by sooooo many people. She has touched so many hearts along her way and enjoyed many lasting friendships. Watching and listening to Patti do Patti was so uplifting and even invigorating. Seems like there was noting she couldn’t accomplish. She made lemonade out of lemons. It makes me smile just thinking about it. I value all of our talks, her advice, her encouragement and prayers. Darryl you have been the epitome of a husband (she knew you were a blessing from God) and she was so proud of you Aisha & Ayana and what you both have accomplished (especially her grandkids). I was always excited to hear hear her (Mommy Brown) updates & good news about you all and her goddaughters. Well I could write a book but I just wanted to express a bit of what I was bless to experience through our friendship. I love you all so very much. Sending up prayer for you and love to you. May God comfort you and surround you with His peace during this time of bereavement.

I just recently found out about Patti’s passing. I was very sorry to hear. Patti always said, God is good. He let her breathe easy again but must of needed her up in heaven. I think my father probably greeted her. Patti was truly special and one of a kind. An angel. My prayers go out to the girls and Darryl.

I sit here trying to write something about my friend/sister; but when I use the past tense it seems unreal. Pat and I became friends in 7th grade when we both attended Columbus Jr. High. From day one, I knew she was special. Over the years her kind grace, her warm heart and comforting words when needed, still resonates with me. We had the type of friendship where we didn’t have to talk often, but when we did, it was like picking up from the day before. She always made me feel welcome no matter where we would meet up. She fought a good fight but God needed her more. To the family, stay strong and know we have truly lost a good one. She is finally at peace.

Condolence from Bruce Perrone on November 19th, 2021 1:14 pm

I am so sad that the world and her family have lost Patti. Your grief is deep, I’m sure, but know that it is matched by the enormous respect and admiration she held from everyone who knew her in the legal aid world. In Ohio, and in the four state region of our training project, and indeed in legal training circles throughout America.

I worked with Patti, and learned so much from her, on the 4-state legal aid training organization known as “CORT.” I’m a West Virginia legal aid lawyer, and for over 40 years, with Patti as a constant I attended CORT trainings, planned CORT trainings, and hosted CORT trainings. I’m sure many of us on the CORT board knew that we might not have succeeded so well but for Patti’s knowledge, skills, and unflappable competence. I learned early (and to my relief) that Patti could help me repair any mistake I made.

All of us on the CORT Board respected Patti’s abilities and her judgment. When she occasionally chose to speak up at meetings, we listened. Meanwhile, she was everyone’s friend. When Patti came in the room, everyone else got a smile on their face and welcome tone in their voice.

She was truly special. All who knew her will miss her. I am so sorry for your loss.

Condolence from Janice Tiscenko on November 21st, 2021 7:14 pm

I had the pleasure of meeting My Friend Patty Payne Brown in 9th grade at Harbor High School. With her last name starting with a P and my last name with an R I had the blessing of sitting right behind her. At first Patty was shy it’s hard being in 9th grade let alone being under class men with everyone being older then us. What I remember the most about Patty was her beautiful smile and her soft voice what I didn’t realize that beautiful person was going to become my very best friend. I would go to her with my difficult decision asking Patty please Patty what you do? She would think awhile and then she would answer when I took her advice it usually came out good but when I didn’t well that was on me! Sometimes we would laugh and she’d said I don’t know what I’m going to do with you. But one thing that never changed in our high school years was her loyalty to our friendship. I could confide in her and never I mean never did she ever break my trust! I believe she was an Amazing person and one of a kind even back then as the day she met up with the Angels, fly high Patty I will never forget our friendship and I love you very very much ❤️
Your High School Friend
