Portia J. Dyson

Portia J Dyson, age 92, was born July 21, 1927. She departed this earthly life on June 7, 2020.

Portia raised four children single-handedly, due to her husband’s passing. She dedicated her life to helping anyone in need. She was the first African American to graduate from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Portsmouth, OH, her hometown.

Portia worked as a Registered Nurse at OSU Hospital for 13 years. She worked in various nursing homes throughout Columbus, OH. She retired from Resthaven Nursing Home after over 20 years as the Director of Nursing.

Portia was known and loved by many as “Na Naw”, a grandmother to all.

Portia is preceded in death by loving husband, Charles Dyson; parents, Thomas and Alice Archie; sister, Carnita Judge; and brother, Rudy Archie.

Portia leaves to cherish her memory, children, Florence “Cookie” (Eric) Bayless, Charlene “Lisa”, Charles II “Chuckie” (Annette), and Robyn Woodson; sisters, Mary and Nazarie Archie; grandchildren, Michelle, Mike (Damiyr), Tiffany “Nikki” (Walter), Michelle “Baby Chelle” Butler, Janelle Woodson, Danyale Woodson; 14 great grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Private Visitation 10:00 AM and Funeral Service 11:00 AM Friday, June 19, 2020 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE NORTH 2500 Cleveland Ave. Masks are mandatory.

Interment at Union Cemetery Association.
