Columbus

Bernadean Singleton, 83, affectionately known as "Bernie," was born on February 26, 1942, in Molena, Georgia, and moved to Columbus, Ohio, with her family at age two. Surrounded by loved ones, Bernie unexpectedly passed away on August 31, 2025, at Riverside Methodist Hospital.

Bernie was a dedicated member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church from a young age until the church moved from Southfield to the east side of Columbus.

She was known for her outgoing personality, delicious food, and generous spirit. Bernie was especially famous for her baked goods, seafood pasta salad, and her talent for recreating restaurant-style dishes at home after just one tasting. She never met a stranger and quickly connected with everyone she met.

Throughout her career, Bernie worked as a Chef and Food Service Manager at the Masonic Temple and served as a Corporate Trainer for Bob Evans. She also worked as a tax preparer and notary public for the state of Ohio for many years. She retired at age 70 in 2012.

Bernie was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Henry and Johnnie Mae (Love) Harden; her siblings, Willie Mae “Mable” Cato, Mac “MC” Thompson, John “Johnnie” Harden, Charlene Waiters, Thelma “Fatty” Kent, and Roderick “Ricky” Harden; her former husband, Carlos Singleton; and great-grandson Jeff “Baby Jeff” Hairston.

She leaves to cherish her memory her siblings, Velma Harden, Patricia Harden, Nevester “Nevie” Harden, James (Cathy) Harden, Terry (Stephanie) Harden, and Cassandra “Sandy” Harden; her daughters, Latoia (Frank) Burgess, Tamra Hairston, Dana Harden-Freeman (Curtis), and Carlita (Kevin) Smith; her grandchildren, Devon Bell, Diara (Corey) Kendrich, Jeffery (Kimyhata) Hairston, India Golden (Derick), JaJuan Hairston Micaela), Brandi Dowe, Deja Harden, Jasmine Hairston, Desiree Harden, Kevin Smith II, and Kyla Smith; along with numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Bernie touched everyone she met and will be deeply missed by all.
