Mother Betty L. Oglesby

Jun 21, 1938 — Jun 12, 2026

Mother Betty L. (Scott) Oglesby "Mrs. Betty" passed away peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the residence of her daughter Tammy. She was born in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late Henry and Cuemie (Talley) Scott.

She attended Mansfield City Schools. She began her working career in general labor, working at the Independent Towel, then proceeded to be one of the first women of color to work at General Motors known as "The Glove Lady" and Steel Mill. She got hired first, at General Motors, took a layoff, and went to Steelmill only to accept the job til General Motors called her back. She then dedicated her services to General Motors for 32 years, retiring July 31, 2006.

Mother Betty Oglesby was a lifetime valued member of Greater St. John’s COGIC, now Oasis of Love church family. She was part of the Nurses Guild and on the breakfast committee for the early Sunday Morning Breakfast. She was known as a no non-sense woman at work and around town as a Lady of Class and Dignity. She prided herself and spoke of how she marched from the old church on Harker St.; under the guidance of Elder Ward to the new church on Chester Ave. She was also under leadership Bishop Walter Jordan, Dr. Walter Jordan ll, and Presiding Pastor Raymond Cochran. Most of all, she was known as a child of God. Betty had a loving and caring heart. She loved to cook, and everyone knew that when she did, they always had a guaranteed plate waiting; especially during the holidays. If you knew Mother Betty she was a avid bingo player and loved to travel. A proud matriarch, she deeply valued the legacy of five generations of family. She was prided about being a great, great grandma.

A highlight in Betty’s life was her union with her husband The Late Edwin Oglesby Jr., in August of 1968.

Mother Betty leaves to cherish her memory her loving and dedicated daughter, Tammy (Oglesby) Macklin, 2 sons, Terry Hood of California, and Anthony Oglesby of Georgia. Son-in-law Terone Butler and stepdaughter April Edwards of Dayton, Sister Joan Carter, Uncle Calvin Cannada, 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Her special friend, Doris Feagin, whom she affectionately called "Feagin", was her work buddy, travel companion, and church sister and sister friend. Special honorary son Edward Lanier. Host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband. She was predeceased in death by her daughter, Minister Betty Ann Butler, and granddaughters, Tracey and Krishonda Mathews. Also, her favorite cousin sister Sadie Perdue.

A Dedication to the Sadie and Betty; honoring the memory of their lived together; They were raised like sisters. They argue and play fight like sisters even into adulthood. They intertwine their families like sisters, and growing up, we thought they were sisters. Even in Eternity, we know they are together like sisters, (LOL) Sadie brought her and her husband James plot/gravesite right beside Betty and her late husband Edwin.
