Carl Eugene Smith, a dedicated family man, community servant, and pillar of strength and grace, passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a rich legacy of love, leadership, and service. His life's journey, spanning over seven remarkable decades, was marked by tireless work, deep-rooted faith, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others.
Born to Charles Floyd and Catherine Smith, Carl was raised with strong values that shaped the course of his life. In April 1980, he married the love of his life, Sheryl (Turner), in Columbus, Ohio. Carl's career allowed them to travel extensively, both domestically and internationally, before they returned home to Columbus in 1993 to build a beautiful life and family together. Carl and Sheryl shared a union that stood the test of time, raising two children, Tiffany and Salena. This family grew to include five grandchildren, who brought both Carl and Sheryl immense pride and joy. Affectionately known as "Paw Paw," Carl held a special place in their hearts—a steady, loving presence full of wisdom, humor, and warmth.
Carl took great pride in caring and providing for his loved ones, always placing family at the center of everything he did.
Professionally, Carl was known for his remarkable dedication throughout a career spanning over five decades in the medical instrumentation field, working for several Fortune 500 companies. He began as a field service engineer and progressed to the role of Regional Senior Customer Care Manager within a competitive field service environment at a company employing over sixty-thousand people. Carl received numerous prestigious awards, including multiple honors for distinguished and outstanding achievement in customer satisfaction. Notably, he transformed an underperforming region into the Service Region of the Year—testaments to his integrity and leadership. Carl earned multiple bachelor's degrees and was an alumnus of The Ohio State University, Ohio Dominican University, and DeVry University. A dedicated lifelong learner, he was only one semester away from completing his Master of Business Administration (MBA).
A man of profound faith, Carl often found guidance, comfort, and purpose in God. In times of deep adversity, when others may have lost heart, God directly offered him hope by reminding him: 'I have taught the doctors all they know—I did not teach them all I know.' This specific assurance fortified his faith and resolve.
To Carl, time spent with family meant more than silver and gold. He loved life, and his unique, candid, humor brought laughter and joy to all around him. No one was ever a stranger to Carl; his presence was warm, his smile genuine, and he was always ready to offer wise advice and a hearty laugh.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Floyd and Catherine Smith, and his younger brother, Gary Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Sheryl; his daughters, Tiffany (Corey) Jacox and Salena Smith; his grandchildren, Jaleel (Kylie) Smith, Ravin Withers, Jaeden Smith, Chayce Jacox, and Chloe Jacox; his brothers, Edward, Floyd, Dallas (Patty), and Kelvin (Jeannie) Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews. Special thanks and acknowledgment go to his close brotherhood and a host lifelong friends.
Carl Eugene Smith lived a life of service, purpose, and love. He leaves behind a legacy that will echo for generations, etched forever in the hearts of those who had the blessing of knowing him. May his memory be a guiding light and his life an enduring inspiration.
