Clarence’s Story

Clarence “Red” Lane Jr. was born June 20, 1930, in Chicago to the late Clarence Lane and Virginia Stovall. He entered eternal rest on March 6, 2025, in his home surrounded by his beloved family. Clarence was survived by his daughter, Antonia “Toni”, sons Dredrick, Clarence “Poot” and sister Rosie Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his wife Lena Lane, son Richard Lane, brothers Richard Lane, Dave Lane, sister Lizzie Dawson, and Melvin Golsby.

His Life

Clarence “Red” Lane was a hardworking man of many talents, known for his dedication, perseverance, and entrepreneurial spirit. Despite receiving a formal education up to the seventh grade, he chose to enter the workforce early, embodying a strong work ethic throughout his life.

In his younger years, Clarence worked tirelessly on farms, picking cotton and cutting pulpwood. While living in the Athens area, he contributed to the construction of Stegeman Coliseum at the University of Georgia and played a role in the development of what is now Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

In the early 1960s, Clarence moved to Chicago, where he worked in manufacturing before relocating to Ohio in 1967. There, he spent three years at Jeffery’s Foundry before embarking on his entrepreneurial journey. His first venture was a painting business, where he instilled in his sons the values of pride and hard work. Over time, his business expanded into construction, specializing in asphalt and concrete.

Through determination and skill, Clarence founded Lane Paving Company and later partnered with property investor Sandy Soloman (Oxford Realty), and numerous other clients throughout central Ohio. This collaboration led to significant business opportunities, which helped Clarence become one of the state’s first certified minority paving contractors in central Ohio leading to state contracts with Ohio State University and ODOT. Clarence’s legacy of hard work and dedication continued until his health prevented him from being on the job in 2023.

His Love

Clarence had many loves and was loved by many. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. In 1966, he married Lena Lane, and they shared a loving partnership until her passing in 2000. He was the beloved father of Antonia (the late Larry) Pittman, Clarence (Trudy) Lane, Dredrick (Stacey) Lane, and stepdaughter Arta Edwards. He was a proud grandfather to ten, great-grandfather to twelve, and great-great-grandfather to seven. In 2004, he married again to Rosia Edwards.

Clarence was known by many names—Mr. Lane, Clarence, Deacon Lane, and Red—but to know him was to love him. He was deeply devoted to God, his church, and his family. As a faithful member of Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church, he served diligently for 48 years.

Of all his nicknames, those he cherished most were “Dad,” “Daddy,” “Pawpaw,” and “Granddaddy.” His family adored him, expressing their love in every interaction. His infectious smile could light up any room, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. Clarence’s legacy of love, hard work, and faith will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
