Deborah Lucas, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on July 1, 2025, at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy defined by compassion, excellence, and unwavering dedication to young people. She was a lifelong educator whose impact will be felt for generations to come.

Deborah was born on October 19, 1954, in Springfield, Ohio, and was raised in the close-knit village of Yellow Springs. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Lucas III and Beverly J. Lucas, and the beloved sister of Samuel Lucas IV (Lisa) and Aaron Lucas (Melissa). She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews-Erika, Samuel, Alicia, Melia, and AJ.

From a young age, Deborah exhibited extraordinary talent. She was a gifted violinist who once performed at the legendary Carnegie Hall, a testament to her dedication, artistry, and brilliance. That same drive would carry her throughout a remarkable life of service and scholarship.

Deborah earned both her undergraduate and master's degrees from The Ohio State University. She went on to dedicate nearly 40 years to Columbus City Schools, where she served with pride, purpose, and a fierce commitment to student success. Her most impactful years were spent at East High School, where she taught chemistry and mathematics for over two decades.

Deborah was more than a teacher-she was a mentor, advocate, and second mother to thousands of students. Her classroom was a place of transformation, where she encouraged young people to believe in their own brilliance and to pursue lives of purpose. Her legacy lives on in every student she inspired. Her students were her life's work-and they were her life's greatest joy.
