It is with great sadness that we must announce the departure of our beloved mother, aunt, cousin and friend; the matriarch of our family.
Dorothy Jane Burton-Carr, age 88, was born on June 1, 1938 to the late Joseph Holmes Sr., and the late Geneva Swain-Holmes in Louisville, KY. She earned her wings on Saturday June 6, 2026 at home surrounded by her loving children. She was the last of our elders. She lived to see five generations during her lifetime.
She was one daughter of six children, she moved to Mansfield early in life being raised by her maternal grandmother Millie Swain until she married, during her early years she went to Mansfield Public Schools, attending Mansfield Senior High. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at the young age of 15, becoming a member of Temple of Faith Church of God in Christ, now known as Maddox Memorial Church of God in Christ. She married Rudy L Burton shortly after leaving school and began their family. To this union was born five children, Ruby Burton (three), Cliffton Burton (two), Sonja Baker (two), Vivian Davis (two), and Richard Burton.
She later married Harry Carr in 1983, the love of her life, they got to experience things in life together that she had missed out on while raising her children. Harry cherished her. They remained married for 25 years until his passing. She worked for Therm-O-Disc until her retirement.
She was the life of any gathering, always smiling and laughing. She was straight to the point and very direct. She loved the Kentucky Derby and watching Steve Harvey and The Young and The Restless all day if she could. Dorothy loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 25 years, Harry Carr; maternal grandparents: Edward and Millie Swain; parents: Joseph and Geneva Holmes; sisters: Gladys McClain, Susie Mae Ware, and Millie Ann Mack; brothers: James Earl Holmes, and Joseph Holmes Jr.
She leaves to cherish her legacy and memories: Ruby Burton, Clifton and Elizabeth (deceased) Burton, Sonja and William Baker, Richard Burton all of Mansfield, OH., and Vivian and Anthony Davis of Toledo, OH.; Special Niece: Joyce Jefferson who she loved like a daughter. She has five Stepdaughters by marriage: Brenda Fuqua, Sandra Carr, Stacey Carr, Kim Carr and Joyce Carr (Deceased); a host of Grandchildren: Kevin and Kim Burton (six), Ernesty Burton (one), Dorothea Burton (two), Anthony and Laronna Ware (six), Jaleeka Burton (five), Dedric Burton (one), Keisha Burton, Antonio and Lakeisha Davis (four), and Adreian (Arielle) Davis (one); seven Great-Grandchildren and a host of Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.
