George Richard
Cunningham
Nov 5, 1951 — Oct 6, 2026
George Richard Cunningham was born on November 5, 1951, in Columbus, Ohio, to Elnora “Missy” Cunningham and George William Cunningham. One of four brothers and two sisters, George was raised with the values of family, hard work, and faith that would guide him throughout his life.
At an early age, George dedicated his life to Christ, and his faith became the foundation of how he lived and cared for others. A devoted prayer warrior, he rose early each morning to pray for family and friends, share prayer requests, and send scriptures to encourage them. He often reminded those he loved, “All we have to do is take it to God in prayer.” Through his prayers, compassion, and unwavering faith, he offered comfort and reminded others that they never had to face life’s challenges alone.
Affectionately known as Dad, Papa, Uncle George, Mr. George, and “The Man,” George was a mentor, a father figure, and a trusted source of support to many. Generous with his time and resources, he was a wonderful listener who made people feel heard and cared for. Whether someone needed advice, a helping hand, or his presence during an important moment, George showed up. People knew they could count on him, and being there for others was simply who he was.
George brought that same dedication to his career, serving the Auditor of State for more than 29 years before retiring. A gifted public speaker, he earned first-place honors in numerous speaking competitions. He was also incredibly handy, with a talent for building and fixing just about anything. When something needed repairing, George was often the person people called. Through his words, skills, and willingness to help, he made a difference in the lives of many.
Of all his accomplishments, George often said that being a father was his greatest achievement. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He cherished guiding his family, sharing his faith, and teaching the importance of hard work, kindness, and love. Above all, he wanted them to know how deeply they were loved and that they could always count on him.
George also knew how to enjoy life! His great sense of humor and boisterous laugh could light up a room and bring joy to any gathering. He loved cooking and sharing meals with family and friends, spending time outdoors, and traveling. Rarely did he go anywhere without his camera, ready to capture special moments. In retirement, he treasured time with family, close friends, and his beloved dog, Gracie.
George was preceded in death by his beloved son, George R. Cunningham, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children, Keesha Cunningham, ToShika Cunningham, Shannon Cunningham, and Danielle Jordan; his beloved grandchildren, Kioriya Mitchell, Karliah (De’Metrius) Wilson, Victoria (Kynnsley) Mitchell, George Cunningham III, Gerelle Ward Cunningham, and Savon Cunningham; his siblings, Wanda Hairston and Jeffrey Cunningham; his former spouse, Shirley Cunningham; and a host of great-grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory and the love he shared.
Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that George’s legacy lives on through the lives he inspired and the family he so faithfully loved and nurtured. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
