Howard Kelton Tyler, Age 91, departed this life on August 12, 2026. Howard was born to the late Estelle M. Calloway and Robert Tyler on July 1, 1935, in Columbus, Ohio.
He is preceded in death by his mother Estelle, father Robert, sister, Ann Robinson and son, Marc Tyler. While living in Columbus, Ohio, Howard attended and graduated from East High School.
While in high school he was a member of the East High School Swim team. After graduation he attended West Virginia State for three years. During his time in Columbus, he met his wife Gloria Hutchinson Tyler whom he celebrated wedding bliss for 54 years. Over their years of marriage, Howard and Gloria traveled over twenty-five states and several countries. He spent many years working with kids in local schools and even provided swimming lessons.
He constantly talked about his times going door to door selling insurance and even connected it to times that he sold eggs from door to door without dropping a single egg. Howard always had an opinion on local and national news events. Most folks would say he always had an opinion, especially when it disagreed with everyone else.
He tried to be a consistent golf player, maybe not the best player, but he enjoyed time with his son-in-law and the State Farm crew during fund-raising events. The thing he enjoyed the most was fishing. From local fish spots in Columbus to his favorite location at Port Clinton where his mobile home was located. That was his weekend get-away for himself and he invited the family as well.
He loved sports in general, coaching basketball at St. Francis Desales Columbus. He was a Buckeye fan in the areas of football primarily. Watched sports constantly when he was near a television set. Howard served in the United States Air Force for four years with an honorable discharge. Howard was a hard-working man and spent fifty-one of those years as an Agent with State Farm Insurance.
During his free time, he enjoyed the life of a camper and a fisherman. He maintained a mobile home on the campgrounds of Port Clinton for over 18 years where he entertained family and friends. During his summers at Port Clinton he taught his grandchildren how to swim, how to fish and the fun of camping.
He was on the swimming team while in college and afterwards.
He enjoyed working and spending time with the family and will be missed by not only past co-workers, but by the people that he helped to develop close relationships.
Howard leaves to cherish his memory his wife Gloria Tyler, his daughter Judith (Bob) Cunningham, son Jeffrey (Marisa) Potter, his grandchildren Symonne and Justin (Jazmine) Cunningham, Jeffrey Potter, great grandchild Jordyn Cunningham, God child and adopted daughter, Sharon Bridges who fondly named him "Boss Hog" while working in his office, niece, Sharon (Enrico) Perkins of Racine, Wisconsin and a number of family and friends.
