James Edward Amos I

March 2, 1958 — May 5, 2026

Columbus

James Edward Amos was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Roosevelt and Mae Ida Amos; his brothers, Woodrow “TC” Amos and Randy Amos Sr.; his nephew, Randy Amos Jr.; his sisters-in-law Barbara Ridley(Curtis) and Theresa Jones. All of whom would undoubtedly welcome him into eternal rest with love.

James Edward Amos was born, raised and educated in Columbus, Ohio. He was a proud graduate of East High School. Nurtured within the embrace of a close-knit family where faith was foundational, hard work was expected, and perseverance was woven into everyday life. These principles became the cornerstone of the man he would become. His life was measured not by the years he lived, but by the quiet and unforgettable impact he had on the hearts of others. His life reflected a beautifully written story—one rich in faith, resilience, craftsmanship, laughter, loyalty, and devotion to family. Sargent James Amos proudly served 8 years in the United States Army earning numerous medals of accommodation. As an entrepreneur, he was co-owner of Amos Builders and Total Services Unlimited. He served well as a Project superintendent for McDaniel’s Construction.

James, “Fat Cat” possessed an extraordinary gift for working with his hands solving problems (or making problems) others often walked away from. He had a profound appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and lasting traditions. Saturdays were dedicated to passionately cheering on The Ohio State Buckeyes, while Sundays mirrored the familiar emotions of hope, frustration, and unwavering devotion experienced by every devoted Cleveland Browns fan. Our own “Tiger~Cub”, not Woods found strategic precision and a serene rhythm in golf, as well as a competitive drive in bowling. A perfect “300” score was not uncommon. Whether on the golf course or the alley, he exuded the same calm confidence.

Faith served as the defining anchor throughout James’s life. In 2025, he made an intentional decision to recommit his life to the Lord and was baptized at Trinity Baptist Church. His wisdom was thoughtful, his humor timely, his generosity sincere, and his spirit unforgettable. The legacy James Amos leaves with us cannot be confined to a single accomplishment, title, or moment in time. And if James could leave one final message behind, perhaps it would simply be this: Love now and extend grace to others’. Be patient and kind, tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Though James’ earthly journey may have reached its end, the extraordinary love he cultivated throughout his life continues to live vibrantly through the family he cherished beyond measure. At the heart of that love, his devoted wife of nearly twenty years, Denia Jefferson~Amos (DJ) his confidante, and companion.

James also leaves behind his sons, James Amos II, affectionately known as “Lil James,” and Alonzo (Brenda) Jefferson; daughter, LaKisha Jefferson; brothers, Jeremiah Amos, Timothy Amos, and Johnny (LaShaun) Amos; sisters, Deborah Amos and Patricia (Larry) Howard; brothers-in-law, Ernest (Nicole) Jefferson Jr., Howard Dukes, John (Jewel) Dukes, Gregory (Marcia) Dukes; and his sisters-in-law, Audrey Amos, Yolanda (Gilbert) Moore, and Tonya Davis. James treasured the extraordinary connection he shared with his mother-in-love, Glendora Bond (Kurtis). Their relationship was rooted in mutual admiration, warmth, humor, and unwavering affection—a bond that transcended titles and reflected genuine love and respect. He also shared a special relationship with his father-in-law, Ernest Jefferson Sr. (Mary).

Further enriching his legacy are his seven “Grand Blessings”, Aryne, Avrie, Ari, Jae’l, Ja’Den, Emanii, and Cole. One perfect great-grandchild, Kyrie. A host of beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Special friends: Ronald Bogan, Bryan Fulgham, Antoine Livers, Hartzell Brooks, Marko, Len Hayes, Frank Turner, Lewis Turner, Ray Wilson, Faye Becket, Leah Price, Freddie Holmes, Rick Lopez, and his TBC family.
