James Shannon Filmore

Mar 2, 1988 — Jun 17, 2026

James Shannon Filmore, affectionately known as "Shay" to his family and friends, departed this life on June 17, 2026, at the age of 38.

Though his time on Earth was far too short, Shay left an enduring impact on the countless lives he touched. Known throughout the Columbus dance community and beyond, Shay was a bright spirit whose infectious smile, warm personality, and genuine love for people made him unforgettable to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Shay had a lot of passions. Star Wars and Marvel movies, anime such as Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, music, fashion and video games were just a few of the things he truly enjoyed. He loved Black culture and finding creative ways to represent it in his work. The same could be said of his love for Columbus, which he intentionally showcased. He especially loved good food, a passion cultivated by his grandfather who taught him how to cook. They would often watch Food Network programs that had been recorded on VHS tapes. He also enjoyed traveling, exploring new experiences, and sharing adventures with those he loved. Most of all, Shay cherished being around people and using his many talents to inspire, encourage, and uplift others.

His journey in the arts began at an early age through martial arts training at the Eldon and Elsie Ward YMCA on Woodland Avenue in Columbus. Through dedication and perseverance, he achieved the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. In 2006, Shay graduated from Fort Hayes Performing Arts High School, where his passion for dance flourished and set the course for his life's work.

Over the years, Shay, better known to his dance family as Shannon or even J. Shannon, became a respected dance instructor, teaching Hip Hop and Jazz, and earned recognition as a talented choreographer. His commitment to the art form culminated in 2017 when he co-founded Tru Kingdom Mega Dance Crew Inc., where he helped mentor, inspire, and develop dancers while building a lasting legacy within the dance community he loved so deeply.

Shay was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Bob and Elaine. He is survived by his mother, Mereda; sister, Krystene "Kryssi"; nephews, Kayden, Khalil, and Kashious; niece, Ka'Layah; eldest cousins, Robert "Robbie" and Brenton "Juan" and a legion of friends, followers, students, supporters, and members of his cherished dance community.

To all of his loved ones, join us for a celebration of Shay's life to be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Marlan J. Gary Chapel of Peace, 2500 N. Cleveland Avenue, Columbus, Ohio. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m.

As we gather to celebrate and remember a life well lived, we honor Shay's legacy of love, creativity, perseverance, and joy. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.
